Some sins begin not with open conflict, but with a whisper or an unfounded accusation. When someone “kicks the ball of sin” by acting without facts, witnesses, due process, or reverence for God, others may follow, lacking self-control, discernment, and love.

Such behavior is the sin of the instigator.

An instigator is someone who disagrees or raises a concern without truth or humility. Scripture allows for correction, discernment, and accountability. However, the instigator of sinful offense initiates trouble without righteousness, spreads suspicion without evidence, fuels division without love, and is detrimental where prayer, patience, and biblical resolution are needed.

In today’s volatile environment, gossip and offense easily influence many Christians. Although the fruit of the Spirit is often discussed, it is rarely practiced during conflict. Galatians 5:22–23 lists these qualities, yet self-control remains a significant shortcoming in the modern church.

Without self-control, anger leads to accusation, suspicion becomes slander, and preference results in partiality. Hurt feelings escalate to hatred, and one person’s instability can divide an entire group. This often leads to unjust hatred, marginalization, and condemnation of fellow believers.

Jesus Himself was hated without cause. In John 15:25, He said, “They hated Me without a cause.” That statement is not only a prophecy fulfilled in Christ; it is also a warning to those who follow Him. The servant is not greater than his master. If the world hated Christ without cause, those who truly belong to Him may also experience hatred without cause.

Those who hate without cause reveal a heart not aligned with God’s love.

First John 4:8 says, “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” This does not mean love is sentimental blindness. Biblical love does not excuse sin, hide wickedness, or reject correction. But biblical love never delights in lies, never rejoices in evil, and never destroys the innocent through gossip, prejudice, or false accusation. First Corinthians 13:6 says love “does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth.”

Christians should ask themselves: Am I rejoicing in truth, or am I inwardly pleased to hear negative things about someone I already dislike?

The Dangerous Beginning: When One Person Causes Offense

Matthew 18 is one of the most sobering chapters in the New Testament because Jesus speaks directly about humility, little ones, offense, sin, restoration, and judgment. The disciples asked, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Jesus called a little child, set him before them, and taught that unless they were converted and became as little children, they would not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Christ, then, issued a terrifying warning: whoever causes one of His little ones who believe in Him to sin would be better off with a millstone hung around his neck and drowned in the depth of the sea. Then He declared, “Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!”

The warning, “Woe to that man by whom the offense comes,” should prompt every believer to reflect seriously.

Judgment applies not only to sin but also to causing others to sin. Accountability extends beyond personal rebellion to include provoking rebellion in others. Those who plant suspicion, spread falsehood, begin division, or cause others to stumble must answer to God.

In Scripture, offenses are not treated lightly. A stumbling block is not a harmless misunderstanding when it arises from pride, lies, manipulation, hatred, or partiality. Jesus did not say, “Blessed is the one who starts offense and watches others fall.” He said, “Woe.”

Instigators may justify their actions with emotional reasoning, claiming concern or a desire to warn others. Yet God examines the heart. Proverbs 16:2 says, “All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirits.”

Gossip disguised in religious language remains sinful before God. Calling slander “discernment” is still walking in darkness. Claiming to protect the church while causing division is equally wrong.

False Accusation Is Not Discernment

False accusations are one of Satan’s oldest works. Revelation 12:10 calls him “the accuser of our brethren.” The devil’s nature is accusation, deception, and destruction. When believers accuse without truth, they are not imitating Christ. They are imitating the accuser.

Therefore Scripture requires witnesses, order, patience, and careful judgment.

Deuteronomy 19:15 teaches that one witness is not enough to establish a matter. Second Corinthians 13:1 says, “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.” First Timothy 5:19 warns not to receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses.

The principle is clear: God does not endorse reckless accusations.

To accuse without evidence is not courage. It is sin. To believe accusations without examination is not wisdom. It is foolishness. Proverbs 18:13 says, “He who answers a matter before he hears it is folly and shame to him. Proverbs 18:17 adds that the first one to plead his cause seems right until his neighbor comes and examines him.

Divisions often arise when people react to only one side of a story, mistaking it for the whole truth. This lack of self-control is dangerous. Immature believers react quickly, but Spirit-led believers pause, pray, examine, and avoid unrighteous judgment.

James 1:19 commands, “Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath.” That is not optional advice; it is Christian discipline.

Anyone who spreads an accusation before verifying the truth becomes complicit in the sin. Even if they did not start the issue, they contributed to its spread. This is the sin of judging others by outward appearance, wealth, status, influence, ethnicity, social standing, or preference. It is favoritism, prejudice, classism, and selective honor.

James warns believers not to hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ with partiality. Partiality contradicts the gospel.

Why? Because the gospel humbles all men equal before the cross. Just as the poor man needs Christ’s blood, so too does the rich man. The powerful woman needs the same mercy as the unknown woman. The famous preacher needs the same grace as the unnoticed servant. At Calvary, human status dies.

Partiality becomes especially dangerous when accusations arise. If a wealthy, popular, educated, or influential person accuses someone of lower status, partiality often leads people to believe the accuser immediately. If a favored group dislikes someone, partiality allows them to condemn that person before evidence is ever examined.

Such actions are unjust and sinful.

Leviticus 19:15 says, “You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty; in righteousness you shall judge your neighbor. God does not allow reverse partiality or elite partiality. He commands righteous judgment.

Jesus said in John 7:24, “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

Partiality treats people as tools. It measures worth by usefulness. It says, “This person matters because they can benefit me.” It says, “That person does not matter because they have no influence.” It creates cliques, inner circles, prejudice, classism, and spiritual coldness.

When partiality enters the church, genuine love declines.

A church controlled by partiality will protect the favored and punish the innocent. It will platform the charming and neglect the humble. It will listen to the loud and ignore the wounded. It will excuse the instigator and blame the victim.

But God is not partial. Romans 2:11 says, “For there is no partiality with God.”

Gossip: The Fuel of Division

If a false accusation ignites conflict, gossip sustains and intensifies it.

Proverbs 16:28 says, “A perverse man sows strife, and a whisperer separates the best of friends.” This verse reveals the destructive power of the whisperer. The whisperer does not always shout. He does not always post publicly. He quietly poisons relationships. He plants seeds. He suggests. He hints. He says enough to damage trust but not enough to be held accountable.

Proverbs 26:20 says, “Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; and where there is no talebearer, strife ceases.”

Some conflicts persist because people keep fueling them with their words. Divisions endure when conversations persist, and wounds remain open when stories are repeatedly shared.

A spirit-filled believer must discern when to end a conversation.

Ephesians 4:29 commands believers to let no corrupt word proceed out of their mouths, but only what is beneficial for necessary edification. Colossians 4:6 says speech should be with grace, seasoned with salt. Psalm 141:3 says, “Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.”

Believers must not let their words become instruments of harm.

Before repeating a matter, the believer should ask, “Is it true?” Is it necessary? Is it righteous? Is it my place to say? Have I verified it? Am I helping restoration, or am I feeding division?

Proverbs 17:9 says, “He who covers a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates friends.” This does not mean covering abuse, crime, corruption, or serious sin that must be addressed. It means love does not delight in spreading shame. Love seeks righteous resolution, not public destruction.

Divisions Are Works of the Flesh

The Bible does not treat division as a small personality problem. It places sinful division among the works of the flesh.

Galatians 5 contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit. Among the works of the flesh are “hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, and heresies. “These are not minor issues. They are fleshly works that oppose the Spirit.

Then Paul presents the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Where there is no self-control, there will soon be division. Where there is no love, there will soon be partiality. Where there is no longsuffering, there will soon be offense. Where there is no gentleness, correction becomes cruelty. Where there is no goodness, people begin to enjoy the downfall of others.

Romans 16:17 gives a direct warning: “Note those who cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.” Titus 3:10 says, “Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition.”

This is serious. Scripture instructs the church to warn divisive individuals and, if they refuse correction, to avoid them. One divisive person can affect an entire group. One unstable believer can become a tool Satan uses to weaken unity, distract the church, harm the innocent, and hinder the work of the gospel.

God is honored by unity grounded in truth. Division, confusion, suspicion, and pride undermine unity.

Psalm 133:1 says, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” In John 17, Jesus prayed His people would be one. Ephesians 4:3 commands believers to endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Unity is not me. Unity is not mere agreement or silence about sin. True unity is spirit-led loyalty to Christ, truth, holiness, love, and one another—correction versus sinful instigation.

It is important to make a biblical distinction. Sinfulness is not a characteristic of every confrontation. Not every separation is wrong. Some accusations are true. Not every rebuke is hatred.

The Bible commands believers to correct sin.

Matthew 18 provides a process for dealing with a brother who sins. Galatians 6:1 says that if a man is overtaken in a trespass, those who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness, considering himself lest he also be tempted—Second Timothy 4:2 commands ministers to convince, rebuke, and exhort with all longsuffering and teaching. First Timothy 5:20 says those who sin should be rebuked publicly so that the rest may fear.

Righteous correction has distinct marks.

It is truthful. It is not based on rumors. It follows biblical order. It seeks restoration where possible. It is humble. It is reluctant, not eager. Humiliation is not something it enjoys. It does not create secret factions. It does not weaponize partiality. It refrains from condemning without evidence. It does not stir up hatred.

Sinful instigation is different.

It is driven by pride, jealousy, suspicion, personal offense, selfish ambition, insecurity, or hidden hatred. It often avoids proper process because the goal is not truth but influence. It gathers allies before seeking resolution. It spreads concern as gossip. It frames personal dislike as spiritual discernment. A court of public opinion is created, but the accused is not allowed to answer.

Such behavior is unacceptable.

Proverbs 6:16–19 lists things the Lord hates, including “a lying tongue,” “a false witness who speaks lies,” and “one who sows discord among brethren.” That should put an end to it. God hates the sowing of discord.

An instigator may appear influential for a time, but God sees and judges their actions.

Hated Without a Cause

Jesus being hated without cause reveals the darkness of the human heart. The Pharisees watched Him heal, teach, forgive, deliver, and reveal the Father. Yet they hated Him. Why? Because His righteousness exposed their hypocrisy. His humility exposed their pride. His truth exposed their traditions. His authority exposed their insecurity.

Those who follow Christ should not be surprised when they are hated without cause.

Matthew 5:11–12 says believers are blessed when people revile and persecute them and say all kinds of evil against them falsely for Christ’s sake. First Peter 4:14 says if believers are reproached for the name of Christ, they are blessed. Second Timothy 3:12 says all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

There is particular sorrow when unjust hatred comes from those who profess faith.

Psalm 35:19 says, “Do not let those who wrongfully oppose me rejoice; do not let those who hate me without cause wink.” Psalm 69:4 says those who hate without cause are more than the hairs of the head. These scriptures reveal that false hatred is not new. God’s people have long suffered at the hands of unjust enemies.

However, Christians must not respond in the same Spirit.

Romans 12:17–21 commands believers not to repay evil with evil but to overcome evil with good. Jesus said to love our enemies, bless those who curse us, do good to those who hate us, and pray for those who spitefully use and persecute us.

This response is not weakness, but true spiritual strength.

Self-control is not silence because of fear. Self-control is power under the rule of the Holy Spirit. It is the ability to refuse sinful reactions even when wronged. It is the ability to tell the truth without hatred, confront sin without pride, and endure false accusation without becoming false in return.

Self-Control: The Forgotten Fruit in a Reactionary Age

We live in a reactionary age. People react before praying, post before verifying, accuse before examining, and divide before reconciling. Many assume strong emotion equals truth.

But the Christian is not called to be ruled by emotion. The Christian is called to be led by the Spirit.

Proverbs 25:28 says, “Whoever has no rule over his spirit is like a city broken down, without walls.” A believer in self-control has no walls. Anything can enter. Anger enters. Suspicion enters. Pride enters. Satanic suggestion enters. Gossip enters. Offense enters.

Second Timothy 1:7 says God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. A sound mind is not easily manipulated. A sound mind does not join a mob. A sound mind does not confuse accusation with proof. A sound mind does not mistake partiality for loyalty.

Self-control safeguards the church community.

It slows the tongue, disciplines emotions, refuses exaggeration, waits for truth, seeks peace, confronts properly, and does not allow Satan to turn pain into poison.

James 3 warns that the tongue is a fire. It can defile the whole body and set on fire the course of nature. Many churches have survived external persecution but have been damaged by internal tongues. Many ministries have endured financial pressure but were wounded by whisperers. Many believers have survived worldly attacks but were crushed by false brethren.

The fruit of the Spirit is not optional; it is essential for the church’s well-being.

The Proper Biblical Protocol

When offense or accusation arises, Scripture gives the church a better way.

First, examine yourself. Jesus warned against focusing on the speck in a brother’s eye while ignoring the plank in your own. Self-examination protects us from hypocrisy.

Second, seek truth, not victory. Proverbs 18:17 reminds us that one side may sound right until the other is heard. A Christian must not be eager to condemn.

Third, go directly when appropriate. Matthew 18 teaches private confrontation before escalation. Many divisions would die immediately if believers obeyed this one command.

Fourth, involve witnesses when necessary. Serious matters require confirmation, not gossip.

Fifth, seek restoration where possible. Galatians 6:1 calls the spiritual to restore with gentleness.

Sixth, rebuke persistent divisiveness. Titus 3:10 and Romans 16:17 show that divisive people must not be allowed to keep destroying the body.

Seventh, refuse partiality. James 2 and Leviticus 19:15 demand righteous judgment.

Eighth, guard the tongue. Ephesians 4:29 and Proverbs 26:20 teach that corrupt speech fuels strife.

Finally, walk in love. Colossians 3:14 says, “But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.”

The church should rely on biblical obedience rather than worldly methods of conflict resolution.

When Satan Uses an Unstable Believer

Not every person who causes division realizes the full spiritual damage they are doing. Sometimes an unstable believer becomes a vehicle for Satan’s purpose without recognizing it. Peter loved Jesus, yet when he resisted the way of the cross, Jesus said, “Get behind Me, Satan!” The issue was not that Peter was literally Satan, but that his thinking had become aligned with Satan’s opposition to God’s will.

Likewise, when a believer spreads accusation, partiality, or division, Satan can use that person’s lack of self-control to harm the body.

Second Corinthians 2:11 says believers should not be ignorant of Satan’s devices. One of his devices is division. Another is accusation. Another is offense. Another is pride disguised as righteousness.

The devil knows that a divided church becomes weaker in witness. A divided ministry loses focus. A divided family loses peace. A divided community loses trust.

That is why Ephesians 4:27 says, “nor allow place to the devil.” Offense provides him a place. Gossip gives him a place. Partiality gives him a place. Unforgiveness provides him a place. False accusations provide him a place.

Do not allow him any opportunities.

The Heart of Christ Toward the Innocent and the Wounded

Jesus is deeply concerned about His little ones. Matthew 18 shows His protective love. He does not treat the vulnerable as disposable. He does not approve of spiritual bullying. He does not ignore those crushed by false judgments.

The church must regain a healthy fear of harming Christ’s little ones.

Some believers are gentle, humble, quiet, childlike, and sincere. They may not know how to defend themselves against organized gossip or partial treatment. They may be easily wounded by accusations that stronger personalities casually spread. But Christ sees them.

To receive such a one in Christ’s name is to receive Christ himself. To cause such a one to stumble is a dreadful offense.

This perspective should shape how Christians communicate with one another.

Before you repeat a claim, remember that the person you are discussing may be precious to Christ. Before excluding someone based on rumors, remember that Christ died for that soul. Before joining a group against someone, remember that God will judge every idle word.

Matthew 12:36 warns that men will render an account for every idle word they speak.

This accountability also applies to religious gossip.

Love Does Not Mean Blindness, and Truth Does Not Mean Cruelty

A mature Christian must hold love and truth together.

Love without truth leads to compromise. Truth without love leads to cruelty. Christ came full of grace and truth.

If someone has sinned, the goal should be righteousness and restoration, not entertainment and destruction. If someone is dangerous, the church must protect the flock. If someone is falsely accused, the church must protect the innocent. If someone is divisive, the church must warn and avoid them.

In all matters, the church must act under the authority of Christ.

Micah 6:8 says the Lord requires us to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. Justice without mercy becomes harsh. Mercy without justice becomes disorder. Both must walk with humility.

The Call to Repentance

The instigator must repent.

The gossip must repent.

The partial person must repent.

The divisive person must repent.

The one who believed lies without examination must repent.

The one who hated without cause must repent.

The one who lacked self-control and became a tool of offense must repent.

Repentance is not merely saying, “I am sorry.” It is turning from sin. It may require confession, correcting false reports, public clarification if the damage was public, seeking forgiveness from the person harmed, or stepping back from influence until the heart is healed.

Matthew 5:23–24 teaches that if a brother has something against you, reconciliation matters. Romans 12:18 says, “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.”

Do what is within your control.

You cannot force everyone to repent. You cannot make everyone tell the truth. You cannot stop every accusation. But you can refuse to become what hurt you. You can walk in truth. You can guard your tongue. You can reject partiality. You can practice self-control. You can bless those who curse you. You can leave vengeance to God.

Romans 12:19 says, “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,” says the Lord.

Conclusion: Avoid Initiating Sinful Actions

The world is already filled with offense. The church must not become another place for accusation, gossip, partiality, or division. God’s people are called to be different.

Do not be the person by whom offense comes.

Do not start wrongdoing and then claim innocence because others continued it.

Do not be detrimental and then blame the consequences.

Do not call hatred discernment.

Do not call partiality loyalty.

Do not call gossip a concern.

Do not call division truth.

Christ calls His people to humility like little children, love without hypocrisy, truth without cruelty, correction without pride, and self-control under the Holy Spirit.

This is not the time for careless Christianity. The church’s witness is vital. Both people and God observe our actions.

Let the church return to the fear of God.

Let believers stop accusing without facts.

Let the Spirit govern the tongue.

Let partiality be cast out.

Let divisive people be warned.

Let the wounded be protected.

Let the truth be established.

Let love reign.

And let every follower of Christ remember the words of the Lord Jesus: “Woe to the world because of offenses… but woe to that man by whom the offense comes.”

May we never be that man.

May we be peacemakers, truth bearers, mercy walkers, and Spirit-filled children of God.

For “blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”

The Christian life is not defined merely by religious language, church attendance, public ministry, spiritual gifting, or outward association with Christianity. The true evidence of a life surrendered to God is fruit. Not artificial fruit. Not emotional excitement. Not temporary zeal. Not a religious performance. The Bible teaches that where the Holy Spirit truly dwells, He produces visible, measurable, and enduring spiritual fruit.

The apostle Paul writes in Galatians 5:22–23 (New King James Version): “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” He then adds the powerful declaration: “Against such there is no law.”

This means that the righteous moral will of God does not condemn life governed by the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is no contradiction against God’s law; it is the fulfillment of the character God desires in His people. Those who live, lead, walk, speak, serve, and endure in the fruit of the Spirit are Spirit-led under condemnation but under the transforming power of grace.

Paul also declares in Romans 8:1, “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” But the verse continues with a description of those who “do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” This is crucial. The freedom of the Christian is not a freedom to live carelessly in the flesh. It is freedom from sin’s dominion so that the believer may now walk in holiness, obedience, and Spirit-led devotion to Christ.

Likewise, Romans 12:1–2 calls believers to present their bodies as “a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God,” and to refuse conformity to the world by being transformed through the renewing of the mind. This stage is where the fruit of the Spirit becomes spiritual. It is not only what believers confess; it is how believers live.

Among the fruit listed in Galatians 5, one stands out as a defining test of Christian maturity: self-control. While love is the fountain of Christian virtue, and faithfulness is essential to endurance, self-control is often the battlefield where the sincerity of discipleship is proven. Many Christians can speak about love, desire joy, pray for peace, and admire gentleness, yet fail daily in the disciplined life of self-control.

Self-control is the spiritual guardrail that keeps love from becoming sentiment without obedience, zeal from becoming pride, liberty from becoming license, anger from becoming sin, desire from becoming bondage, and knowledge from becoming arrogance. It is the Spirit-enabled discipline by which believers bring their bodies, thoughts, appetites, words, emotions, and choices under the lordship of Jesus Christ.

In a world that celebrates excess, outrage, lust, greed, self-expression, revenge, and personal autonomy, self-control may be one of the clearest marks that a person belongs to Christ.

The Fruit of the Spirit Begins With the Spirit, Not Human Willpower

Before we examine each fruit, we must understand that Paul says “the fruit of the Spirit,” not “the fruit of human effort.” These virtues are not produced by natural discipline alone. They are the result of the Holy Spirit working within a surrendered life.

Jesus said in John 15:4–5, “Abide in Me, and I in you.” He continued, “He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” Fruit comes from abiding. A branch does not produce fruit by detaching itself from the vine and trying harder. Fruit comes through union, dependence, nourishment, pruning, and life flowing from the vine.

This is why self-help techniques, motivational slogans, or outward moralism cannot manufacture Christian character. True spiritual fruit is born from the life of Christ in believers. As 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” The fruit of the Spirit is the Spirit of that new creation life.

Paul contrasts the fruit of the Spirit with the fruits of the flesh in Galatians 5:19–21. The works of the flesh include adultery, fornication, uncleanness, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, envy, drunkenness, and similar things. These are not merely bad, sinful habits; they are signs of the flesh ruling the life.

Then Paul says in Galatians 5:24, “Those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” This is the foundation of self-control. The Christian does not negotiate with the flesh as though it has equal authority with the Spirit. The Spirit must be crucified. Its appetites must not be enthroned. Its impulses must not govern the believer.

The Holy Spirit does not merely comfort the believer; He also conquers the sinful patterns that once ruled the believer.

Love: The First Fruit and the Foundation of All Christian Character

The fruit of the Spirit begins in spiritual love because God Himself is love. 1 John 4:8 says, “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” Christian love is not merely an emotion, a preference, or cultural politeness. It is the sacrificial, holy, truth-filled love revealed in Jesus Christ.

Jesus said in John 13:34–35 that His disciples would be known by their love for one another. This love is not optional. It is the public mark of true discipleship.

Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13:1–3 that a person may speak with tongues, possess prophetic gifts, understand mysteries, have great faith, give away possessions, and even suffer greatly, yet without love, it profits nothing. This means that spiritual gifts without spiritual fruit are dangerous. Gifts may draw attention, but fruit reveals transformation.

Love is also the fulfillment of the law. Romans 13:10 says, “Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” Yet biblical love does not rejoice in sin. 1 Corinthians 13:6 says love “does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth.”

Therefore, the fruit of love must be governed by holiness. Love without truth becomes compromise. Truth without love becomes harshness—the Spirit produces it.

Joy: The Strength of the Believer in a Troubled World

Joy is not the same as temporary happiness. Happiness often depends on circumstances, but spiritual joy is rooted in the Lord. The believer can have joy even in suffering because joy flows from salvation, hope, and fellowship with Christ.

Nehemiah 8:10 declares, “The joy of the LORD is your strength.” David prayed in Psalm 51:12, “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation.” Jesus told His disciples in John 15:11 that His words were given so that His joy might remain in them and their joy might be full.

The early church understood joy even under pressure. Acts 5:41 says the apostles rejoiced because they were counted worthy to suffer shame for the name of Christ. James 1:2–4 calls believers to count it all joy when they fall into various trials, knowing that such trials produce patience and maturity.

This joy is not a denial of pain. It is confidence that Christ is greater than pain. It acknowledges sorrow’s existence. Paul spoke of being “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing” in 2 Corinthians 6:10. Christian joy is deeper than emotional comfort because it is anchored in eternal hope.

Peace: The Rest of a Heart Reconciled to God

Peace is one of the greatest treasures of the Spirit-filled life. Before peace can rule the heart, it must first be made with God. Romans 5:1 says, “Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

This peace is not the absence of warfare around us but the presence of God within us. Jesus said in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, the peace I grant to you.” He also said in John 16:33, “In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

The believer’s peace is guarded by prayer. Philippians 4:6–7 teaches that when believers bring their requests to God with thanksgiving, “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,” will guard their hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

This peace also shapes how believers live with others. Romans 12:18 says, “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.” Hebrews 12:14 commands believers to pursue peace with all people and holiness, “without which no one will see the Lord.”

Peace is not passivity. It is not a weakness. It is the settled strength of a life surrendered to God.

Longsuffering: The Power to Endure Without Becoming Bitter

Longsuffering, often understood as patience or forbearance, is one of the most necessary fruits in the Christian life. It is the Spirit’s work that enables believers to endure people, trials, delays, insults, disappointments, and persecution without surrendering to bitterness.

God Himself is longsuffering. 2 Peter 3:9 says the Lord is “longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” Exodus 34:6 describes the Lord as merciful, gracious, and “longsuffering.”

If God has been patient with us, how can we refuse to be patient toward others?

Paul writes in Ephesians 4:1–2 that believers should walk worthy of their calling “with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love.” Colossians 3:12–13 instructs the people of God to put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, and forgiveness.

Longsuffering is especially needed in ministry, family life, leadership, and church fellowship. Without it, believers become easily offended, quick to abandon relationships, and slow to forgive. But the Spirit trains Christians to endure in love.

Kindness: The Beauty of Christ Displayed Through His People

Kindness is love expressed in tender action. It is not weakness, flattery, or people-pleasing. It is the gracious disposition of Christ made visible through words, conduct, mercy, and service.

Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” Proverbs 19:22 says, “What is desired in a man is kindness.”

The kindness of God leads sinners to repentance. Romans 2:4 asks whether people despise the riches of God’s goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, unaware that the goodness of God leads to repentance. Titus 3:4–5 speaks of the kindness and love of God our Savior appearing, not because of works of righteousness we have done, but according to His mercy.

Christian kindness is not selective. Jesus taught in Luke 6:35 that God is kind even to the unthankful and evil. Therefore, the believer must not reserve kindness only for those who are easy to love.

A harsh Christian misrepresents the gentleness of Christ. A cruel Christian contradicts the Spirit. Where Spirit rules, kindness will appear.

Goodness: Moral Integrity in a Corrupt Generation

Goodness is not merely being nice. It is moral uprightness, spiritual integrity, generosity, and devotion to what is pleasing to God. The good person, in the biblical sense, is one whose heart and actions reflect the character of God.

Psalm 34:8 says, “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good.” Since God is good, His people must reflect goodness. Micah 6:8 says the Lord has shown man what is good: to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Good works do not save us, but saved people are created for good works. Ephesians 2:10 says believers are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.

Goodness also resists evil. Romans 12:21 says, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” This verse is vital in a hostile and morally confused world. The Christian does not overcome evil by becoming evil, but by remaining faithful to God’s character. The Christian overcomes evil by remaining faithful to God’s character.

Faithfulness: The Steadfast Life That Does Not Abandon Christ

Faithfulness is loyalty, reliability, endurance, and trustworthiness before God. It is the fruit that makes a believer consistent when feelings change, trials increase, temptations intensify, and public opinion turns against truth.

1 Corinthians 4:2 says, “It is required in stewards that one be found faithful.” Jesus said in Luke 16:10, “He who is faithful in what is least is also faithful in what is much.” Faithfulness is proven not only in great assignments but also in small acts of obedience.

God Himself is faithful. Lamentations 3:22–23 says His compassions fail not and “Great is Your faithfulness.” 1 Thessalonians 5:24 declares, “He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.”

Because God is faithful, His people must also be faithful. Faithfulness keeps the believer from drifting. Faithfulness keeps inconsistency from destroying marriages, churches, ministries, families, and callings.

Revelation 2:10 says, “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” This is not casual Christianity. This is covenant endurance.

Gentleness: Strength Under the Control of the Spirit

Gentleness is often misunderstood as weakness, but biblical gentleness is strength submitted to God. It is power governed by humility. It is truth spoken without cruelty. It is a correction delivered without pride.

Jesus described Himself in Matthew 11:29 as “gentle and lowly in heart.” If the Lord of glory is gentle, no Christian should despise gentleness.

Paul instructed in Galatians 6:1 that if a man is overtaken in a trespass, spiritual believers should restore such a one “in a spirit of gentleness,” considering themselves lest they also be tempted. This means correction must not be driven by arrogance. The goal is restoration, not humiliation.

2 Timothy 2:24–25 says a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, and in humility correcting those in opposition. 1 Peter 3:15 says believers should defend the hope within them “with meekness and fear.”

Gentleness is especially needed in a world addicted to arguments, outrage, public shaming, and verbal violence. The Spirit-filled believer must not reflect the Spirit’s character.

Self-Control: The Defining Fruit Many Christians Neglect

The final fruit listed in Galatians 5:22–23 is self-control. It may appear last, but it is not least. In many ways, self-control is the fence around the vineyard of Christian character. Without it, the other fruits are easily damaged.

Self-control is the Spirit-enabled ability to govern one’s desires, speech, emotions, thoughts, appetites, habits, and actions under the authority of Christ. It does not mean the believer saves himself by discipline. It means grace trains the believer to deny ungodliness and live soberly.

Titus 2:11–12 teaches that the grace of God that brings salvation also teaches believers to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, and to live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.

That is self-control.

Self-control is where many Christians fail because it touches everything: the tongue, anger, lust, food, money, time, entertainment, ambition, pride, technology, relationships, and private life. A person may appear spiritual publicly but be defeated privately because self-control has not been cultivated.

Proverbs 25:28 says, “Whoever has no rule over his spirit is like a city broken down, without walls.” This is a serious image. A person without self-control is exposed, vulnerable, and easily tempted.

Paul understood the necessity of discipline. In 1 Corinthians 9:27, he wrote, “I discipline my body and bring it into subjection.” Paul was not speaking as an unbeliever seeking salvation. He was speaking as an apostle who understood that the body must not rule the Spirit.

Self-spirit is also essential in the mind. 2 Corinthians 10:5 speaks of bringing “every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” The Christian cannot allow every thought to roam freely. Thoughts must be judged by truth, purified by Scripture, and submitted to Christ.

Self-control is essential in speech. James 1:19 says that believers must be “swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” James 3:5–6 warns that the tongue, though small, can set great things on fire. Many believers lose spiritual credibility not because they lack doctrine but because they lack control of the tongue.

Self-control is essential in anger. Ephesians 4:26–27 says, “Be angry, and do not sin,” and warns believers not to give place to the devil. Uncontrolled anger becomes a door to spiritual destruction.

Self-control is essential in sexual purity. 1 Thessalonians 4:3–5 says the will of God is sanctification, that each believer should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor. In a culture saturated with lust, the Christian must live differently.

Self-control is essential in sobriety and watchfulness. 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober, be vigilant,” because the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Spiritual alertness requires disciplined living.

Self-control is not optional for leaders. 1 Timothy 3:2–3 teaches that a bishop must be temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy, and gentle. Titus 1:7–8 also emphasizes that an overseer must be self-controlled, holy, and disciplined.

This is why self-control is a hallmark of Christian living. It is the visible proof that Christ is not merely admired but obeyed.

Romans 12: The Fruit of the Spirit in Daily Christian Conduct

Romans 12 offers one of the clearest pictures of what Spirit-led living looks like in practice. It begins by calling believers to present their bodies as a living sacrifice. This immediately confronts the modern idea that the body belongs to the self. For the Christian, the body belongs to God.

Romans 12:2 calls believers not to be conformed to this world. This requires self-control. The world constantly pressures believers to think, speak, spend, desire, dress, react, and live according to its pattern. The renewed mind resists that pressure.

Romans 12 then describes sincere love, hatred of evil, devotion to good, brotherly affection, diligence, fervency in Spirit, patience in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer, generosity, hospitality, blessing persecutors, humility, peace, refusal to avenge oneself, and overcoming evil with good.

This chapter shows the fruit of the Spirit in action.

It indicates that the fruit of the Spirit is not limited to private devotion. It governs public conduct, relationships, reactions to enemies, church fellowship, and social witness. The believer does not simply claim to have the Spirit; he or she demonstrates the Spirit through spirit-led conduct.

Romans 8: No Condemnation for Those Who Walk According to the Spirit

Romans 8 is one of the most powerful chapters in the Bible concerning life in the Spirit. It is the Spirit who makes the great announcement that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

This Spirit does not mean sin is harmless. It means that those who are truly in Christ are no longer under sin’s condemnation and are now empowered by the Spirit to live spiritually.

Romans 8:5 says those who live according to the flesh set their minds on fleshly things, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on spiritual things. Romans adds that being carnally minded is death, but being spiritually minded is life and peace.

This is why self-control matters so deeply. The mind must be governed. The desires must be governed. The body must be governed. The believer must not live as though the flesh has the final Word.

Romans 8:13 says, “If by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” Notice the phrase “by the Spirit.” Christian self-control is not flesh trying to defeat flesh, but rather the believer relying on the Holy Spirit to put sinful deeds to death. It is the believer relying on the Holy Spirit to put sinful deeds to death.

This is Spirit-empowered discipline.

Against Such, There Is No Law

When Paul says, “Against such there is no law,” he is showing that the fruit of the Spirit fulfills the law that could expose sin but not produce it in the sinful heart. The law can reveal sin, but the Spirit transfigures life.

The fruit of the Spirit does reflect God’s righteous standard. Love does not break God’s law. Joy does not break God’s law. Peace does not break God’s law. Longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control do not stand under divine condemnation.

A life filled with these fruits reflects the character God desires. Such a life does not need a law to restrain it from evil, because the Spirit is inspiring holy desires within it.

This is not lawlessness. This is the higher life of the Spirit.

The Spirit of Claiming Christ Without Bearing Fruit

Jesus warned that fruit matters. In Matthew 7:16–20, He said, “You will know them by their fruits.” A good tree bears good fruit, and a bad tree bears bad fruit. This warning should sober every believer.

Christian identity cannot be reduced to words alone. James 1:22 says that believers must be doers of the Word, not hearers only, or they will deceive themselves. James 2:17 says faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

This does not teach salvation by works. It teaches that saving faith is living faith, and living faith produces evidence.

Jesus said in Luke 6:46, “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” That question remains urgent today. If Christ is Lord, then His people must submit to Him. Self-control is one of the clearest ways that submission becomes visible.

How Believers Grow in the Fruit of the Spirit

The fruit of the Spirit grows through abiding in Christ, obeying the Word, yielding to the Spirit, praying, and experiencing repentance, fellowship, discipline, and suffering. Growth is not instant perfection, but it must be real.

Believers grow by abiding in Christ. Jesus said in John 15:7 that if His words abide in us, we will ask what we desire, and it shall be done. The Word must dwell richly in the believer. Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.”

Believers grow by walking in the Spirit. Galatians 5:16 says, “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” This is daily, active dependence.

Believers grow by prayer. Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 26:41, “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The Spirit is indeed willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Believers grow as they renew their minds. Romans 12:2 teaches transformation through the renewing of the mind. The mind must be washed by Scripture and guarded from worldly corruption.

Believers grow by repentance. 1 John 1:9 promises that if we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Believers grow through testing. Romans 5:3–4 teaches that tribulation produces perseverance, character, and hope. God often uses difficulty to deepen the fruit of our faith.

Believers grow by putting off the old man and putting on the new. Ephesians 4:22–24 commands believers to put off the former conduct of the old man and to put on the new man created in true righteousness and holiness according to God.

Self-Control in a World Without Restraint

The present age often celebrates the very things Scripture warns against. People are encouraged to follow every desire, speak every thought, pursue every appetite, and define freedom as the absence of restraint. But biblical freedom is not slavery to desire. True freedom is the power to obey God.

Jesus said in John 8:34 that whoever sins is a slave to sin. But He also said in John 8:36, “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

Freedom in Christ means the believer is no longer ruled by sin. The Christian can say no to lust, rage, envy, drunkenness, greed, gossip, revenge, pride, and fear, and yes to righteousness.

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 reminds believers that their bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and that they were bought at a price. Therefore, they must glorify God in body and Spirit, which pleases God.

This is the heart of self-control: “I belong to Christ.”

The world may turn against biblical truth. Culture may mock holiness. Temptation may increase. But the believer who walks in self-control declares daily that Jesus Christ is Lord over the body, mind, mouth, desires, time, money, and future.

The Church Needs the Fruit More Than Ever

The modern church does not merely need more noise, platforms, debates, conferences, or personalities. The church needs visible fruit. The world must see believers who love deeply, rejoice faithfully, live peacefully, suffer patiently, act kindly, do good, remain faithful, speak gently, and live with self-control.

A church filled with spiritual gifts but lacking spiritual fruit becomes unstable. A believer with knowledge but no self-control becomes dangerous. A leader with influence but no discipline becomes a stumbling block. A Christian with zeal but no gentleness wounds others. A person who claims love but lacks holiness misrepresents Christ.

The fruit of the Spirit is no inspiration. It is discipleship.

Conclusion: The Spirit-Led Life Is the Christ-Controlled Life

The fruit of the Spirit reveals the Spirit-filled life of Christ in the believer. Love shows His heart. Joy shows His victory. Peace shows His rule. Longsuffering shows His patience. Kindness shows His mercy. Goodness shows His righteousness. Faithfulness shows His covenant strength. Gentleness shows His humility. Self-control shows His lordship.

Self-control is not the enemy of grace. It is one of the fruits that grace produces. It is not legalism. It is Spirit-led obedience. It is not self-salvation. It is the disciplined life of one who has been saved, filled, and governed by the Holy Spirit.

The believer who lives in self-control does not claim ownership over life but confesses daily: “I am Christ’s.” Such a person presents the body as a living sacrifice, refuses conformity to the world, walks according to the Spirit, puts the Spirit at the deeds of the body, and lives free from condemnation in Christ Jesus.

Against such things, there is no law.

Therefore, let every believer examine the fruit. Let every leader examine the fruit. Let every church examine the fruit. Let every household examine the fruit. For the fruit knows the root, and the life surrendered to the Holy Spirit will increasingly bear the character of Jesus Christ.

In an uncontrolled world, self-control may be one of the clearest signs of true Christianity.

In a drifting generation, the Spirit-filled believer must stand as a living testimony to the fact that Christ transforms, governs, sanctifies, and keeps His people until His return.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is not a religious slogan. It is not a church tradition. It is not a motivational message created by men. It is not a sentimental phrase to be repeated without understanding, reverence, repentance, or faith.

The gospel is the good news of God concerning His Son, Jesus Christ.

It is the message that God sent His Son into the world to save sinners. It is the announcement that Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, was buried, rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, ascended to the right hand of God, and now grants forgiveness, justification, reconciliation, new birth, eternal life, and salvation from judgment to all who repent and believe in Him.

The apostle Paul wrote:

“Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand.”
1 Corinthians 15:1

Then Paul defined the heart of that gospel:

“For I delivered to you first that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.”
1 Corinthians 15:3

“And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.”
1 Corinthians 15:4

This is the good news.

Christ died for our sins.
Christ was buried.
Christ rose again.
Christ saves all who repent and believe.

The Gospel Came from God, Not from Man

One of the most important truths about the gospel is that it did not originate with man.

The gospel was God’s idea.
The gospel came from heaven.
The gospel began in the counsel, mercy, and eternal purpose of God.

Before apostles preached it, before churches taught it, before missionaries carried it, before theologians defined it, and before sinners understood their desperate need for it, God Himself authored the gospel.

The gospel is not man reaching up to God. The gospel is God reaching down to man through His Son, Jesus Christ.

In Luke 1, Scripture records that the angel Gabriel was sent from God to Mary:

“Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth.”

Gabriel did not come on his own authority. God sent him. The message did not originate on Earth. It came from heaven.

Gabriel declared to Mary:

“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.”

Then he announced:

The word “gospel” means good news or good tidings. But biblically, this good news is not vague positivity. It is not earthly optimism. It is not religious encouragement without redemption.

“I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.”

What are those good tidings?

The gospel means good news because sinners need saving.

The Bible says:

The bad news is that sin brings death. The good news is that God gives eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Why the Gospel Must Be Taken Seriously

No one should treat the gospel with contempt.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, had to die for this gospel. The gospel was purchased by blood. It was not cheap. Salvation is freely offered to sinners, but it cost the precious blood of Jesus Christ.

Peter wrote:

“Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold…”

The gospel must not be handled lightly, mocked casually, edited politically, softened culturally, or preached carelessly.

Hebrews warns:

“How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?”

How shall we escape if we despise the blood of Christ?
How shall we escape if we reject the Son of God?
How shall we escape if we treat salvation as though it is optional?

There is no salvation apart from Jesus Christ.

Peter preached:

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:12

Jesus Himself declared the following:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
John 14:6

The world may hate that statement. False religions may resist that statement. Secular culture may mock that statement. But Christianity must never retreat from that statement.

Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father.

The apostle Paul was not ashamed of the gospel.

The cross is central to the gospel.

Jesus did not die as a helpless victim. He died willingly. He died according to the plan of God. He died as the spotless Lamb. He died for our sins.

Isaiah prophesied:

“Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree…”

Christ died for our sins. That means His death was substitutionary. He stood in the place of sinners. He bore the judgment that sinners deserved. He offered Himself as the sacrifice that only He could offer.

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us…”

Jesus knew no sin. He committed no sin. He had no sin. Yet He bore sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

This is why the gospel must never be reduced to moral advice. The gospel is not “try harder.” The gospel is not “be religious.” The gospel is not “follow your heart.” The gospel is not “all roads lead to God.”

The gospel is this: Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.

Paul continues:

“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Faith means trusting in Jesus Christ. It means relying on Him, receiving Him, believing His Word, and resting in His finished work.

The gospel destroys human boasting because salvation is by grace.

Ephesians 2:8–9 says:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.”

Titus 3:5 says:

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us…”

No one will stand before God and boast, “I saved myself.” Every redeemed soul will glorify the Lamb.

Revelation 1:5 praises Jesus Christ:

“To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood…”

All glory belongs to Christ.

The Gospel Restores the Backslidden Christian

The gospel is not only the message that saves the lost. It is also the message that calls the backslidden Christian back to the fear of God, the love of Christ, the authority of Scripture, and the seriousness of holy living.

Many Christians began with zeal but have grown cold. Some once loved prayer, Scripture, worship, holiness, evangelism, and fellowship, but have drifted. Others still attend church but no longer tremble at the Word.

The Lord Jesus warned the church in Ephesus:

“You have left your first love.”
Revelation 2:4

Then He commanded:

“Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works…”
Revelation 2:5

The answer to backsliding is not denial. It is remembrance, repentance, and return.

The gospel reminds the backslidden Christian of the price Christ paid. Jesus did not shed His blood so His people could love the world. He did not die so His people could return to the chains of sin. He did not rise again so His people could sleep spiritually while souls perish.

Titus 2:14 says, Christ:

“Gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people…”

Return to the cross.
Return to repentance.
Return to prayer.
Return to the Word.
Return to holiness.
Return to your first love.
Return to the fear of the Lord.
Return to the mission of the gospel.

1 John 1:9 gives hope:

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins…”

The backslidden Christian should not run from Christ. Run to Him. He is merciful. He restores. He cleanses.

The Gospel Warns the Lost Soul

To the lost soul, the gospel is the message you cannot afford to ignore.

Jesus said:

“For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”
Mark 8:36

You may gain money, reputation, pleasure, education, influence, possessions, comfort, and worldly success, but if you lose your soul, you have lost everything.

Hebrews 9:27 says:

“It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”

But God has provided salvation through Jesus Christ.

John 3:17 says:

“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

Luke 19:10 says:

“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Do not ignore Him. Do not postpone repentance. Do not despise the invitation of God. Do not assume that tomorrow belongs to you.

James 4:14 says life is:

“A vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”

The gospel comes to you as mercy. Receive Christ while the door of mercy is open.

The Gospel Must Be Preached Before the End

Jesus commanded His disciples:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…”
Matthew 28:19

He also said:

“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”
Mark 16:15

And in Matthew 24, the Lord declared:

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.”
Matthew 24:14

The gospel must go forth.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Health Alert Network advisory regarding a 2026 multi-country hantavirus cluster linked to a cruise ship, following the World Health Organization’s notification of a severe acute respiratory illness outbreak among passengers and crew in the Atlantic Ocean. According to the CDC advisory provided to Christianity News Daily, the outbreak involved the Andes virus, a type of hantavirus that can cause severe illness and death, with reported cases, deaths, and ongoing international investigations as of May 8, 2026.

This is not the time for panic. It is the time for truth, prayer, vigilance, and biblical discernment.

The CDC has stated that the risk to public health in the United States is extremely low at this time, while also warning clinicians, public health departments, laboratories, and healthcare workers to be prepared to recognize and respond to cases. The CDC’s public advisory says WHO was notified on May 2, 2026, of severe acute respiratory illness among passengers and crew of a cruise ship; WHO confirmed on May 6 that the virus involved was Andes virus, and, as of May 8, WHO had reported eight cases, including three deaths.

The World Health Organization likewise reported that, as of May 8, there were eight cases, including six laboratory-confirmed and two probable cases, with three deaths, yielding a reported case fatality ratio of 38% in the cluster.

Again, this finding does not mean the world is facing another COVID-19 outbreak. WHO officials have specifically sought to reassure the public that the current hantavirus outbreak is not another COVID-19 and that the broader public health risk remains low. But for believers who read the words of Jesus Christ carefully, any serious disease outbreak should cause us to lift our eyes from the headlines to the Scriptures.

Jesus said:

“And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.”
Matthew 24:7–8, NKJV

The Lord did not tell His disciples to be careless. He told them to be watchful. He did not command fear. He commanded readiness. He did not give prophecy to entertain curiosity. He gave prophecy to prepare His people to endure, to preach, to pray, to repent, and to remain faithful.

What the CDC Is Reporting

The CDC advisory describes the outbreak as a multi-country hantavirus cluster linked to cruise ship travel. The cruise ship reportedly departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, 2026, and traveled across the South Atlantic, stopping at remote locations including Antarctica, South Georgia Island, Tristan da Cunha, Saint Helena, and Ascension Island, carrying passengers and crew from multiple countries. CDC investigators assessed American passengers and their contacts for exposure risk, including individuals who may have been exposed while traveling on aircraft.

The identified virus is the Andes virus, a hantavirus associated with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a severe disease that affects the lungs. Hantaviruses are commonly associated with exposure to infected rodents, including contact with urine, droppings, saliva, or contaminated materials. The CDC notes that the Andes virus is unusual because it is the only hantavirus documented to spread from person to person. However, such transmission is rare and typically requires close, prolonged contact with a symptomatic person.

The CDC says symptoms can appear 4 to 42 days after exposure. Early symptoms may include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, chills, and abdominal pain. Later symptoms may include coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. Because early symptoms can resemble influenza, COVID-19, or other viral illnesses, early diagnosis can be difficult.

The CDC also states that there is no specific treatment recommended for hantavirus infection and that early supportive care is critical. Severe cases may require advanced medical support, including ECMO, when started early.

Therefore, health authorities are treating the matter seriously while still urging the public not to panic.

Not Another COVID-19, But Still a Serious Warning

COVID-19 changed the world. It closed churches, disrupted families, shook economies, exposed government weaknesses, divided communities, and revealed how quickly a microscopic threat can humble modern society. In biblical language, COVID-19 bore the marks of what Scripture calls pestilence: a widespread disease that brings fear, death, disruption, and sober warning.

The new hantavirus cluster is not COVID-19. The current evidence does not point to the same broad global spread. WHO and CDC have both indicated that public risk remains low.

Yet Christians should never evaluate world events solely by whether they become global disasters. The believer asks a more profound question: What is God saying to a world that continues to experience wars, diseases, earthquakes, persecution, lawlessness, and spiritual deception?

Jesus said:

“Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. Do not be troubled; all these things must happen, but the end is not yet.
Matthew 24:4–6, NKJV

Notice carefully: Jesus did not say every war, outbreak, or earthquake means the end has arrived that very day. He said these things would come, and He warned His people not to be troubled. Then he added:

“For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.”
Matthew 24:7, NKJV

That word, pestilence, matters. It means diseases, plagues, outbreaks, and deadly illnesses that trouble nations and remind mankind of its frailty.

The World Is Already Shaking

The hantavirus report comes when the world is already under pressure. Russia and Ukraine remain locked in a war that has reshaped Europe and devastated countless lives, even as reports on May 9, 2026, described a temporary three-day ceasefire connected to Victory Day observances.

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes, is also at the center of serious regional tensions, with reports of military deployments and efforts to safeguard shipping amid an ongoing Iran-related conflict and a maritime security crisis.

Christian persecution is a current reality. Open Doors’ 2026 World Watch List reports that over 388 million Christians face high levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith, with millions facing very high or extreme pressure in the top 50 countries alone.

The Church should not ignore these things. We must not sensationalize them either. The right response is not hysteria, but holiness.

Jesus said:

“But he who endures to the end shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.”
Matthew 24:13–14, NKJV

The sign that should most occupy the Church is not only pestilence. It is not only war. It is not only persecution. The unstoppable preaching of the gospel of the kingdom to all nations and soul-winning or evangelism is the duty and sole responsibility of the true church of Jesus Christ, which cannot abort or give up the mission under any circumstances.

Pestilence in Scripture

The Bible repeatedly speaks of pestilence as one way a fallen world experiences judgment, warning, and human weakness.

In the Old Testament, pestilence appears in connection with covenant warnings, national sin, judgment, and the fragility of life. The Lord said through Moses:

I will bring a sword against you to execute the covenant’s vengeance; when you gather in your cities, I will send pestilence among you, and you will be delivered into the enemy’s hand.
Leviticus 26:25, NKJV

Again, in Deuteronomy:

“The Lord will make the plague cling to you until He has consumed you from the land that you are going to possess.”
Deuteronomy 28:21, NKJV

This does not mean that every disease outbreak is automatically tied to one specific sin, one specific nation, or one specific act of judgment. Jesus warned against simplistic interpretations of suffering. When people asked about tragedies in His own day, He did not tell them to speculate about others. He asked them to repent.

“I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”
Luke 13:3, NKJV

That is the Christian response to crisis: not smugness, not finger-pointing, not panic, but repentance before God.

A Call to Watchfulness, Not Fear

The Lord Jesus Christ repeatedly commanded watchfulness.

“Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.”

The CDC’s hantavirus advisory is a medical information resource. Matthew 24 is a prophetic revelation. A faithful Christian does not confuse the two, but neither does he separate life from Scripture. We read the news through the lens of God’s Word.

That means we can say two things at once:

First, based on current CDC and WHO statements, this hantavirus cluster does not appear to be another COVID-19-level global event. The risk to the public in the United States is currently extremely low.

Second, that deadly disease outbreaks continue to appear in a world already filled with war, instability, persecution, and spiritual deception should cause every believer to hear again the words of Christ: “See that you are not troubled.”

Being untroubled does not mean being careless. “Not troubled” means “anchored.”

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, even though the earth is removed.”
Psalm 46:1–2, NKJV

The Christian Response to Disease Outbreaks

When disease appears, Christians should not become reckless in the name of faith. Biblical faith is not foolishness. Satan tempted Jesus to throw Himself down from the pinnacle of the temple, twisting Scripture to make recklessness look spiritual. Jesus answered,

“It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”
Matthew 4:7, NKJV

Therefore, Christians should pray and practice wisdom. We should trust God but also listen carefully to responsible health guidance. We should reject panic but also reject arrogance.

A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished.

In practical terms, that means believers should remain informed, follow legitimate public health guidance, seek medical care when symptoms are serious, and avoid spreading rumors or conspiracy-driven fear.

The Church must differ from the world. We pray when the world panics. We speak the truth when the world lies. When the world mocks God, we preach Christ. When the world trembles, we stand upon the Rock.

It indicated that many people had placed their ultimate trust in governments, economies, science, entertainment, social systems, religious routines, and personal freedoms. Then, in a matter of weeks, many of those things shook.

Hebrews declares:

“Yet once more I shake not only the earth but also heaven.”
Hebrews 12:26, NKJV

And then Scripture explains why God shakes what can be shaken:

“That the things which cannot be shaken may remain.”
Hebrews 12:27, NKJV

Every crisis asks mankind a question: What remains when the world is shaken?

For the believer, the answer is Jesus Christ.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
Hebrews 13:8, NKJV

If hantavirus remains contained, we thank God. If it spreads further, we trust in God. We will continue preaching the gospel of God in the event of future disease outbreaks. The Christian hope is not built on disease, economic, military, or political forecasts. Our hope is built on the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Beginning of Sorrows

Matthew 24 uses a solemn phrase: “the beginning of sorrows.”

That does not mean the Church should declare every headline to be the final trumpet. But it means the world will not improve itself into a paradise. Scripture says the last days will include deception, conflict, lawlessness, false prophets, betrayal, persecution, and cold love.

Jesus said:

“And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.”
Matthew 24:12, NKJV

Paul also warned:

“But know the truth: that in the last days, perilous times will come.”
2 Timothy 3:1, NKJV

Then Paul described a generation marked by self-love, pride, blasphemy, disobedience, ingratitude, unholiness, brutality, slander, lack of self-control, hatred of good, betrayal, arrogance, pleasure-loving, and religious appearance without true godliness.

“Having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people, turn away!
2 Timothy 3:5, NKJV

Therefore, Christianity News Daily does not report disease outbreaks merely as health stories. We report them as part of the larger spiritual condition of the world. A fallen world groans. Creation groans. Nations groan. Families groan. The persecuted Church groans. And believers groan within themselves, waiting for the redemption of their bodies.

“For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.”
Romans 8:22, NKJV

Do Not Mock the Warnings of God

In Noah’s day, people continued eating, drinking, marrying, and living as if judgment would never come.

Jesus said:

“But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.”
Matthew 24:37, NKJV

He continued:

“For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark.”
Matthew 24:38, NKJV

The issue was not that eating or marriage was sinful. The issue was spiritual blindness. They lived as though God had not spoken. They treated the preacher of righteousness as a fool until the flood came.

They did not know until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
Matthew 24:39, NKJV

So it is today. Many people mock Bible prophecy. Many mock preachers. Many mock holiness. Many mock warnings. Many say, “Where is the promise of His coming?”

Peter warned:

“Scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming?’”
2 Peter 3:3–4, NKJV

But the delay of judgment is not proof that God is absent. It is proof that God is long-suffering.

The Lord keeps His promise, is patient, and desires all to come to repentance instead of perishing.
2 Peter 3:9, NKJV

The Gospel Must Be Preached While There Is Time

Disease outbreaks remind us that life is fragile. Death can come suddenly. Health can change overnight. Plans can collapse. Ships can be quarantined. Borders can close. Economies can shake. The human body, in all its pride, can be humbled by a virus invisible to the naked eye.

James says:

“For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”
James 4:14, NKJV

Therefore, the urgent message is not merely, “Watch the virus.” The urgent message is, “Come to Jesus Christ.”

The Lord said:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
John 14:6, NKJV

Peter preached:

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for we must be saved by the one name given under heaven among men.”
Acts 4:12, NKJV

Paul wrote:

If you confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10:9, NKJV

This passage is the message the world needs in an age of pestilence, war, persecution, and fear.

Prayer for the Sick, the Exposed, and the Nations

Christians should pray for those infected, those grieving the deaths, the passengers and crew, the medical teams, public health officials, laboratories, and families affected by this hantavirus cluster.

We should pray that the authorities contain the outbreak quickly. We should pray for wisdom among health authorities. We should pray against fear, confusion, misinformation, and the political misuse of the situation. We should pray that believers remain sober, compassionate, and courageous.

Scripture says:

“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men.”
1 Timothy 2:1, NKJV

And again:

“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him.”
James 5:14, NKJV

The Church must recover the ministry of prayer. We must not become experts at headlines but strangers to the prayer closet.

The Blessed Hope Remains

The world may be troubled, but the believer is not hopeless. Jesus told His disciples the following:

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.”
John 14:1, NKJV

He promised:

I will come again and take you to Myself; that is where I am, and there you may also be.
John 14:3, NKJV

The Christian is not waiting for the next outbreak. The Christian is waiting for the Lord.

Paul called this:

“The blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”
Titus 2:13, NKJV

Until then, we watch. We pray. We preach. We endure. We help the suffering. We speak the truth. We refuse fear. We reject deception. We live holy lives. We proclaim Jesus Christ to a dying world.

Final Word

We should report on the 2026 hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship without sensationalizing it. According to current CDC and WHO reporting, the risk to the public remains low, and international public health coordination is handling the situation.

But spiritually, every outbreak is a reminder that Jesus Christ told the truth. Pestilences would come. Wars would continue. Nations would rage. Believers would be persecuted. Lawlessness would abound. Many would be deceived. Yet the gospel would still be preached.

The world does not need to panic. The world needs Christ.

“Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

Denominationalism is not merely an innocent organizational preference. When it produces spiritual division, party loyalty, man-made identity, legalism, pride, confusion, and separation among those who should be one in Christ, it becomes the very kind of sectarianism the New Testament condemns. The early Church was not divided into Baptists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Methodists, Pentecostals, Catholics, Orthodox, or countless other labels. The believers were disciples of Jesus Christ. They were saints. They were brethren. They were the Church of God. They were the body of Christ.

The Apostle Paul pleaded with the Corinthians that there should be “no divisions” among them but that they should be perfectly joined together in the same mind and judgment. He rebuked them for saying, “I am of Paul,” “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas.” His argument was simple and devastating: “Is Christ divided?” That question still confronts the modern Church.

Christ is not divided. His cross is not denominational. His blood is not sectarian. A human institution does not own His gospel. His body is not to be carved into competing religious camps. The people of God must return to the simplicity and sufficiency of Christ.

Not Philosophy But Christ

Colossians 2 is one of the clearest warnings in the New Testament against religious systems that move believers away from the sufficiency of Jesus Christ. Paul warns the Church not to be deceived by persuasive words, not to be cheated through philosophy and empty deceit, and not to be taken captive by the traditions of men.

He writes:

“Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men… and not according to Christ.”
Colossians 2:8

This is a direct warning against any system that replaces the supremacy of Christ with human religious frameworks. The danger is not always open denial of Jesus. Sometimes the danger comes wrapped in religious language, church tradition, theological pride, institutional loyalty, and denominational identity.

Paul does not tell the Colossians to be rooted in a religious party. He does not tell them to be established in a denominational camp. He tells them:

“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.”
Colossians 2:6

That is the center. Christ Jesus the Lord.

The Church is not called to walk in Baptist identity, Presbyterian identity, Lutheran identity, Methodist identity, Pentecostal identity, Catholic identity, Orthodox identity, or any other man-made label. The Church is called to walk in Christ.

Paul continues by saying believers are to be:

“rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith.”
Colossians 2:7

The foundation is not a denominational confession. The foundation is Christ. The establishment is not a human religious structure. The establishment is in the faith once for all delivered to the saints.

Jude 3 tells believers to “contend earnestly for the faith.” It does not instruct us to contend for denominations. It does not say to contend for party names. It does not say to contend for human systems. It says to contend for the faith.

Not Legalism But Christ

Colossians 2 also warns against legalism. Paul teaches that believers are complete in Christ, forgiven in Christ, buried with Christ in baptism, raised with Christ through faith, and freed from the handwriting of requirements that stood against them.

He says God has made believers alive together with Christ, “having forgiven you all trespasses,” and that Christ has taken the handwriting of requirements out of the way, “having nailed it to the cross” (Colossians 2:13–14).

Then Paul warns:

“So let no one judge you in food or in drink or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths.”
Colossians 2:16

This matters greatly because denominational systems often create rules, distinctions, traditions, regulations, and tests of loyalty that go beyond Scripture. Some judge believers by ceremonies. Some judge by days. Some judge by dietary rules. Some judge by liturgy. Some judge by church tradition. Some judge by denominational customs. Some judge others by whether they belong to their group.

But Paul says these things are a shadow, and the substance is Christ.

Colossians 2:20–23 warns against submitting to regulations such as “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” according to the commandments and doctrines of men. Paul says such things may have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, but they are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.

That is powerful. Legalism may look holy, but it does not produce true holiness. Sectarianism may look orderly, but it does not produce the unity of the Spirit. Denominational pride may look doctrinally serious, but it can quietly replace love, truth, humility, and obedience to Christ.

The Church must be careful. A denomination may claim to defend truth while producing division. A tradition may claim to preserve holiness while binding consciences, even though Christ has made believers free. A religious identity may claim to protect sound doctrine while subtly moving people away from simply saying, “I belong to Jesus Christ.”

Sectarianism Is Sin

The Bible directly condemns sectarianism. In 1 Corinthians 1:10, Paul pleads:

“Now I plead with you, brethren… that there be no divisions among you.”

This is not a small issue. Paul pleads “by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” That means the authority of Christ stands behind this command.

The Corinthians were dividing themselves along lines of spiritual personalities. Some said they were of Paul. Some said they were of Apollos. Some said they were of Cephas. Others claimed to be of Christ in a party spirit. Paul rebuked all of it.

He asked:

“Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you?”
1 Corinthians 1:13

This question destroys sectarian pride. Was your denomination crucified for you? Was your pastor crucified for you? Was your reformer crucified for you? Was your church founder crucified for you? Was your theological camp crucified for you?

No. Christ was crucified.

Paul continues in 1 Corinthians 3:3–4 by exposing the problem as carnality:

“For where there is envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal…?”

When believers boast in human labels and divide into spiritual camps, Paul does not praise them as mature. He calls it carnality. He says that when one person says, “I am of Paul,” and another person says, “I am of Apollos,” they are behaving like mere men.

That is precisely what denominationalism can become today. Instead of saying, “I am a born-again believer in Jesus Christ,” many quickly say, “I am Baptist,” “I am Presbyterian,” “I am Lutheran,” “I am Methodist,” “I am Pentecostal,” or “I am Catholic.” Often, the denominational label becomes the primary identity, while Christ is relegated to the background.

That is spiritually dangerous.

The name of Jesus Christ should be the believer’s highest identity. Acts 11:26 says the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. Denominational names were not the first to be conferred on them. They were known as followers of Christ.

A House Divided Cannot Stand.

Jesus Himself taught the danger of division. When the Pharisees accused Him of casting out demons by Beelzebub, He answered:

“Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.”
Matthew 12:25

This principle applies with frightening seriousness to the visible Church. A divided house cannot stand. A divided witness becomes weakened. A divided people become confused. A divided message becomes vulnerable to deception.

Satan understands the power of division. If he cannot erase the name of Christ from the earth, he works to divide those who confess Christ. He divides through pride. He divides through traditions. He divides through legalism. He divides through personalities. He divides through institutional loyalties. He divides through competing religious names.

This process is how a “Catholic environment” can be reproduced even outside Roman Catholicism. It happens whenever human systems begin to claim authority over conscience, tradition begins to compete with Scripture, and institutional identity begins to overshadow the direct headship of Jesus Christ.

Colossians 2:19 warns against those who are “not holding fast to the Head.” Christ is the Head of the body. When believers hold fast to the Head, the body is nourished and knit together. But when people cling to religious systems more than Christ, division follows.

Ephesians 1:22–23 declares that God gave Christ to be “head over all things to the church, which is His body.” Ephesians 4:15–16 says the body grows as it is joined and knit together under Christ. The Church cannot be healthy when man-made party identities fragment it.

One Lord One Faith One Baptism

Ephesians 4 gives one of the strongest biblical pictures of Christian unity:

“There is one body and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all.”
Ephesians 4:4–6

Notice the language: one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God.

The New Testament does not present a few bodies of Christ. It does not present many competing churches under many denominational heads. It presents one body under one Head.

This does not mean every believer will agree on every secondary issue. It does not mean there will be no local assemblies, no pastors, no elders, no order, and no doctrinal discernment. The New Testament clearly teaches local churches, leadership, discipline, doctrine, and correction.

But it does mean the Church must never turn human labels into spiritual walls. It means believers must never allow denominational loyalty to outweigh loyalty to Christ. It means Christians must never treat other blood-washed believers as outsiders simply because they do not wear the same institutional name.

Galatians 3:27–28 says that those baptized into Christ have put on Christ and that in Him, earthly distinctions do not determine spiritual standing. The deepest Christian identity is not ethnic, social, economic, or denominational. It is Christ.

Colossians 3:11 says, “Christ is all and in all.” That is the answer to denominationalism. Christ is all.

Divisions Are Works of the Flesh

Galatians 5 lists the works of the flesh. Among them are hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, and heresies. In older English usage, the word “heresy” can carry the sense of “factions” or “sects.” The flesh loves party spirit. The flesh loves rivalry. The flesh loves superiority. The flesh loves saying, “My group is better than yours.”

This is one reason Scripture must judge denominationalism. It is not enough to say, “Our denomination teaches truth.” The question is also, does it produce the fruit of the Spirit or the works of the flesh?

Does it produce love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? Or does it produce suspicion, pride, rivalry, contempt, legalism, arrogance, and separation?

James 3:14–16 warns that where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. This is often the fruit of religious party spirit. It brings confusion. It produces pride. It weakens the witness. It divides brethren who should be united in Christ.

Romans 16:17 gives another solemn warning:

“Note those who cause divisions and offenses… and avoid them.”

God does not celebrate those who cause division. He warns the Church to mark them. Titus 3:10 says to reject a divisive man after proper warning. Proverbs 6:16–19 says one of the things the Lord hates is “one who sows discord among brethren.”

That alone should make every believer tremble. God hates the sowing of discord among brethren.

The Prayer of Jesus Was Unity

In John 17, before going to the cross, Jesus prayed for His people. He did not pray that they would be divided into thousands of denominational systems. He prayed:

“That they all may be one… that the world may believe that You sent Me.”
John 17:21

Christian unity is connected to Christian witness. Jesus said the unity of His people would testify to the world. When the Church is divided, the world sees confusion. When Christians fight under competing labels, the gospel’s witness is weakened.

Jesus prayed for unity rooted in the Father and the Son. This approach is not false ecumenism. This is not unity at the expense of truth. John 17 also says, “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your Word is Worthy.” True unity is never built by abandoning Scripture. True unity is built by submission to Scripture and union with Christ.

This is why denominationalism is so dangerous. It often creates two errors at once. On one side, it creates false unity through institutions that tolerate error. On the other hand, it creates unnecessary division among believers who should be united in Christ.

The biblical answer is not shallow unity. The biblical answer is not denominational pride. The biblical answer is unity in truth, holiness, doctrine, love, and submission to Jesus Christ.

The Early Church Was Devoted to the Apostolic Doctrine, not Denominational Identity.

Acts 2:42 says the early believers continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayers. That is the model. They were not devoted to denominational machinery. They were devoted to apostolic teaching, to sharing life in Christ, to worship, to prayer, and to the gospel.

Acts 4:32 says the multitude of those who believed were of “one heart and one soul.” This does not describe a divided people. It describes a Spirit-united Church.

Philippians 1:27 says believers are to stand fast “in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.” Philippians 2:2 calls believers to be “like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.”

The New Testament repeatedly calls the Church to unity, humility, sound doctrine, love, and steadfastness. It never celebrates fragmentation.

The danger of denominationalism is that it can normalize what the apostles condemned. It can make divisions seem ordinary. It can make party names seem harmless. It can make believers comfortable with a fractured body.

But Scripture does not allow us to be comfortable with division.

Denominationalism Can Taint the Grace of Christ

One of the greatest dangers of denominationalism is that it can taint the grace of Christ through legalism. Galatians is a fierce warning against adding requirements to the gospel. Paul says in Galatians 1:6–9 that anyone preaching another gospel is under a curse. In Galatians 2:21, he says:

“I do not set aside the grace of God.”

In Galatians 5:1, he declares:

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.”

Legalism does not always deny Christ outright. It adds to Him. It says Christ is necessary, but not sufficient. It says grace is good, but human rules must complete it. It says faith matters, but denominational regulations must prove it. It says the cross saves, but traditions must secure acceptance.

That is why Colossians 2 is so important. Paul says believers are complete in Christ. Complete means complete. Not half-complete. Not almost complete. Not complete only after submitting to man-made regulations. Complete in Him.

When denominations bind consciences beyond Scripture, they taint grace. When they judge believers by man-made rules, they taint grace. When they equate tradition with Scripture, they taint grace. When they teach believers to identify more with a system than with Christ, they obscure grace.

The Church must return to Christ alone as Head, Savior, Lord, foundation, wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.

Christ Is Not the Author of Confusion

1 Corinthians 14:33 says God is not the author of confusion but of peace. Denominationalism has produced massive confusion worldwide. Many unbelievers look at Christianity and ask, “Why are there so many churches? Why so many doctrines?” Why so many names? Which one is true?”

This confusion is not a small problem. It affects evangelism. It affects discipleship. It affects the credibility of Christian witness. It gives Satan room to mock, confuse, and mislead.

The answer is to acknowledge that doctrine matters. Doctrine matters deeply. 2 Timothy 4:2 commands the preaching of the Word. TiWord1:9 says elders must hold fast the faithful Word. 1 Timothy 4:16 says to take heed to doctrine. 2 John 9 warns against failing to abide in the doctrine of Christ.

But doctrine must lead us to Christ, not to sectarian pride. Sound doctrine should produce humility, holiness, love, obedience, and unity in truth. If doctrine becomes a weapon for party identity while Christ is pushed aside, something has gone terribly wrong.

Come Out of Party Spirit and Return to Christ

The call is not merely to criticize denominations. The call is to repent of party spirit. A believer may be a member of a denominational church and still refuse to worship the denomination. Another may be outside a denomination and still carry a sectarian heart. The issue is deeper than a sign on a building. The issue is allegiance.

Who owns your identity?

Who is your Head?

Who defines your faith?

Who was crucified for you?

Whose name do you confess?

Who receives your highest loyalty?

The answer must be Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 12:2 tells believers to look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Not unto denominations. Not unto traditions of men. Not unto religious systems. Not unto human founders. Unto Jesus.

1 Peter 2:9 says believers are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people. That is the identity of the redeemed. Revelation 5:9 says Christ redeemed people to God by His blood out of every tribe, tongue, people, and nation. His blood creates one redeemed people.

The Church must recover the simplicity of saying:

I am a born-again believer in Jesus Christ.
I belong to Christ.
I am part of His body.
I stand on the Word of God.
I reject division, legalism, and sectarian pride.

Final Warning

Denominationalism becomes sin when it divides what Christ purchased, exalts human names over the name of Jesus, binds consciences with man-made regulations, promotes legalism, produces party spirit, and weakens the unity of the body of Christ.

Paul’s question still stands:

“Is Christ divided?”

The answer is no.

Christ is not divided. His Church should not be divided in Spirit, loyalty, gospel, doctrine, love, or mission. The body has one Head. The Church has one Lord. The redeemed have one Savior. The gospel has one foundation. The saints have one hope.

Not philosophy but Christ.
Not legalism but Christ.
Not denominations but Christ.
Not party spirit but Christ.
Not traditions of men but Christ.
Not the wisdom of this world but Christ crucified and risen.

Let every believer hold fast to the Head. Let every Church repent of divisions that dishonor Christ. Let every preacher warn against sectarianism. Let every Christian refuse to boast in man-made labels. Let the Church return to the apostolic foundation, the unity of the Spirit, the truth of Scripture, and the supremacy of Jesus Christ.

For there is one body, one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.

And Christ alone is the Head of the Church.

This is the central issue in Algeria. The state may have civil authority, but it does not have lordship over Christ’s church. No government has the authority to forbid believers from worshiping the Lord Jesus, gathering in His name, reading the Scriptures, praying together, baptizing disciples, and proclaiming the gospel. When earthly rulers command what God forbids, or forbid what God commands, Christians must obey God.

Severe state persecution in Algeria has forced Protestant churches to shut their doors, pushing believers into hidden worship as authorities continue tightening control over Christian gatherings.

Nearly all Protestant churches in Algeria have now been forced to close, driving thousands of Christians into private homes, informal gatherings, and underground fellowship, according to a recent report highlighted by Christian Daily International. The report says the closures are not random or isolated but part of a long-running legal and administrative campaign against non-Muslim worship in the country.

The situation is especially grave because Algeria’s Constitution formally recognizes freedom of conscience and worship, yet Christians on the ground are facing a completely unique reality. A 2026 report by the European Center for Law and Justice described the system facing Christians as a restrictive legal and administrative structure incompatible with international standards of religious freedom.

According to the ECLJ, the state has now closed 58 evangelical churches, forcing worshippers underground. The report identifies Algeria’s 2006 decree regulating non-Muslim worship and its 2012 law on associations as tools that control and restrict Christian life.

Open Doors has also reported that nearly every Protestant church in Algeria has been forced to close or suspend services, asking Christians worldwide to pray for believers who have lost their places of worship and for converts from Islam who face particular danger.

This is not merely a political or legal matter. It is a spiritual attack against the visible witness of the church of Jesus Christ.

The government may shut doors, seal buildings, restrict permits, and intimidate pastors. But the church of Jesus Christ is not built by permission of the state. It is built by the Lord Himself.

Jesus said:

“I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”
— Matthew 16:18, NKJV

Algeria may close church buildings, but it cannot close the church Christ purchased with His blood.

A Campaign That Has Driven Protestant Worship Underground

For years, Algerian Protestant churches have faced increasing pressure through closures, denied permits, administrative barriers, and legal accusations. The burden has fallen especially on congregations connected to the Protestant Church of Algeria, often known by its French acronym, EPA.

Open Doors’ reporting on Algeria states that Protestant Christians are heavily targeted, with churches associated with the Evangelical Protestant Church either closed or forced to cease almost all meetings. Converts from Islam, who make up much of the Christian community, are especially vulnerable to pressure from family, society, and authorities.

Another Open Doors country report says state pressure on Protestant Christians in Algeria has intensified in recent years, with all 47 churches under the Evangelical Protestant Church of Algeria halting their activities and other independent churches also stopping meetings out of fear of government action.

International Christian Concern reported earlier this year that more than 40 Protestant churches had closed in less than a decade and that only one remained open at that time.

The newest reports suggest the situation has worsened still further. Christian Daily International reported that by January 2025, the last remaining evangelical churches had effectively ceased operations, leaving Christians to gather in private homes and informal settings.

This is how persecution often works. It does not always begin with prison doors. Occasionally, it begins with paperwork. Occasionally, it comes through licensing schemes, denied applications, inspection notices, sealed buildings, vague accusations, and administrative pressure that makes ordinary Christian worship legally impossible.

When the state says, “You may worship only with permission,” and then refuses to grant that permission, religious freedom becomes a dead letter.

The Pattern Is Familiar: First Control, Then Silence, Then Scatter

The pattern in Algeria resembles an old strategy used against the people of God: control the gathering, silence the preaching, intimidate the leaders, and scatter the believers.

But the New Testament shows that persecution never catches God by surprise.

In the book of Acts, the authorities commanded the apostles not to preach in the name of Jesus. The religious rulers wanted the message silenced because the gospel was spreading and the name of Christ was shaking the city.

Peter and John answered:

“Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge.
For we cannot but speak the things that we have seen and heard.”
— Acts 4:19–20, NKJV

Later, when the apostles were again commanded not to teach in the name of Jesus, they gave the answer that has guided the persecuted church for nearly two thousand years:

“We ought to obey God rather than men.”
— Acts 5:29, NKJV

This is the central issue in Algeria. The state may have civil authority, but it does not have lordship over Christ’s church. No government has the authority to forbid believers from worshiping the Lord Jesus, gathering in His name, reading the Scriptures, praying together, baptizing disciples, and proclaiming the gospel.

When earthly rulers command what God forbids, or forbid what God commands, Christians must obey God.

The Church Has Been Here Before

The Algerian church is not experiencing something foreign to Christianity. It is walking the same road the early church walked.

The first Christians did not inherit safety. They inherited a cross.

Jesus told His disciples plainly:

“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.”
— John 15:18, NKJV

He also said:

“Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’
If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.”
— John 15:20, NKJV

The persecution of the church is not accidental. It is the world’s hostility toward Christ expressed against those who belong to Him. The believer should not be surprised when the same world that rejected Jesus also resists His people.

The Apostle Paul later wrote:

“Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.”
— 2 Timothy 3:12, NKJV

This does not mean every Christian will suffer in the same way. Some suffer ridicule. Some suffer rejection. Some lose jobs. Some are imprisoned. Some are beaten. Some are killed. Some, like many Algerian Christians today, are forced out of public worship and into hidden fellowship.

But Scripture is clear: persecution is part of the cost of following Jesus Christ.

Stephen: The First Martyr and the Fire That Scattered the Church

One of the most important New Testament stories for understanding Algeria’s present moment is the martyrdom of Stephen.

Stephen was a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit. He preached Christ with boldness, exposed the hardness of those who resisted the Holy Spirit, and testified to the risen Lord. His hearers became enraged. They cast him out of the city and stoned him.

As he died, Stephen prayed:

“Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
— Acts 7:59, NKJV

Then he cried out:

“Lord, do not charge them with this sin.”
— Acts 7:60, NKJV

Stephen’s death did not end the church’s witness. It ignited a new stage of gospel expansion.

Immediately after Stephen was killed, Scripture says:

“At that time, a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem;
and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.”
— Acts 8:1, NKJV

The enemies of the church thought scattering believers would weaken the movement. But God used the scattering to spread the gospel.

Acts continues:

“Therefore, those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word.”
— Acts 8:4, NKJV

This verse is critical for Algeria.

When persecution scattered the early Christians, they did not stop being the church. They carried the Word with them. They preached Christ wherever they went. They moved from temple courts and public spaces into roads, homes, villages, and new regions.

The same spiritual principle applies today. If Algerian Christians are pushed out of church buildings, they are not pushed out of Christ. If they are scattered into homes, they remain the church. If they meet quietly in private rooms, Christ is still present among them.

Jesus promised:

“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”
— Matthew 18:20, NKJV

The government may close the building, but it cannot remove Christ from the gathering.

The Gospel Advances Even When the Church Is Pressured

The book of Acts shows that persecution often becomes the very road on which the gospel travels.

After the believers were scattered, Philip went down to Samaria and preached Christ there. The result was joy in the city.

“Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them.”
— Acts 8:5, NKJV

This truth is what persecutors never understand. The church is not dependent on comfort. The church is empowered by the Holy Spirit. The gospel does not require political favor to be true. It does not require cultural approval to save sinners. It does not require government permission to remain the power of God unto salvation.

Paul wrote:

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes.”
— Romans 1:16, NKJV

Algeria’s Christians may now be forced into smaller, quieter, hidden gatherings. But the same gospel preached by the apostles remains alive. The same Christ who saved in Jerusalem, Samaria, Antioch, Philippi, Corinth, and Rome is able to save in Algeria.

The Word of God is not chained.

Paul wrote those very words while suffering imprisonment:

“For which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains;
But the word of God is not chained.”
— 2 Timothy 2:9, NKJV

That verse must be remembered over Algeria. Church buildings may be chained. Doors may be locked. Pastors may be threatened. But the Word of God is not chained.

A Manufactured Legal Trap Against Christian Worship

The persecution in Algeria appears to operate through a legal contradiction.

Christians are told they must receive authorization to worship publicly. Yet reports indicate that the approval system has been used in a way that prevents churches from obtaining the permission required to function openly. Christian Daily International reported that Algeria’s legal system requires non-Muslim religious activity to take place in approved buildings, while religious associations must also register under state rules.

The ECLJ has argued that Algerian authorities have cracked down on “spiritual dissent” through repressive laws, citing the 2006 decree governing Christian worship and the 2012 law on associations.

This creates a trap: churches need approval to operate legally, but the approval is withheld or obstructed. Then, when believers gather without approval, they can be accused of unlawful religious activity.

That is not religious freedom. That is religious control.

The early church faced a similar attempt at control. The authorities did not merely dislike the apostles; they wanted to regulate the message. They wanted preaching in Jesus’ name to stop.

Acts 5 records that the apostles were arrested and imprisoned. But during the night, an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and said:

“Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.”
— Acts 5:20, NKJV

That command is powerful. God did not tell them to hide forever. He sent them back to proclaim the words of life.

In Algeria, wisdom may require caution. Believers may need to meet quietly. Pastors may need to protect their congregations. But the calling remains: Christ must be worshiped, the gospel must be preached, and the Word must be carried.

When Buildings Close, Homes Become Sanctuaries

The Algerian crackdown is forcing Christians into private homes and hidden fellowship. This is painful, but it is not unfamiliar to the New Testament church.

The earliest Christians often met in homes. The church was not born in cathedrals, basilicas, or state-approved institutions. It was born through the preaching of Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit, the breaking of bread, the apostles’ doctrine, prayer, and fellowship.

Acts 2 says:

“And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship,
in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”
— Acts 2:42, NKJV

It also says:

“So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house,
They ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart.”
— Acts 2:46, NKJV

House-to-house Christianity is not weak Christianity. It is apostolic Christianity.

When public worship is restricted, the home can become a sanctuary. A table can become a place of fellowship. A living room can become a prayer meeting. A small circle of believers can become a lampstand in the darkness.

This does not excuse Algeria’s suppression of churches. Christians should be free to worship publicly and peacefully. But it does remind us that the church has always been able to survive outside official structures.

Paul greeted churches that met in homes:

“Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus…
Likewise, greet the church that is in their house.”
— Romans 16:3, 5, NKJV

The Algerian believers worshiping in homes today stand in a long line of faithful Christians who gathered under pressure, not because the world welcomed them, but because Christ was worthy.

Converts From Islam Face Special Pressure

Open Doors reports that converts from Islam in Algeria are particularly vulnerable because they can face opposition from family and community, as well as suspicion from authorities.

This matters deeply. Many Algerian Christians are not merely changing religious labels. They are confessing Jesus Christ in a social and spiritual context where leaving Islam can carry serious personal consequences.

Jesus warned that following Him could divide even households:

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.
For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’.
and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’”
— Matthew 10:34–36, NKJV

Those words are not a call to violence. They are a warning that loyalty to Christ may provoke rejection, even within one’s own family.

Jesus continued:

“He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me.
And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.
And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.”
— Matthew 10:37–38, NKJV

For converts in Algeria, these verses are not theoretical. They are lived realities. To confess Christ may mean suspicion, rejection, isolation, legal pressure, or loss of community. Yet the Lord Jesus is worthy of all.

The World May See Weakness, But Heaven Sees Faithfulness

To the world, an underground church may look weak. It lacks buildings. It lacks public visibility. It lacks institutional protection. It may not have signs, steeples, offices, or official recognition.

But heaven sees differently.

The Lord Jesus commended the suffering church in Smyrna:

“I know your works, tribulation, and poverty—but you are rich.”
— Revelation 2:9, NKJV

He then told them:

“Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer.
Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison so that you may be tested.
And you will have tribulation for ten days.
Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”
— Revelation 2:10, NKJV

This is the message persecuted Christians need today. Christ sees. Christ knows. Christ remembers. Christ rewards.

Algerian believers may be ignored by much of the world, but they are not ignored by the Lord of the church. Their secret worship is not secret to Him. Their whispered prayers are heard in heaven. Their hidden gatherings are known by the Shepherd of their souls.

The Church Scattered Is Still the Church Sent

One of the most powerful truths in Acts is that the scattered church became the missionary church.

Persecution did not destroy the mission. It expanded it.

Acts 11 later describes believers scattered by persecution after Stephen’s death:

“Now those who were scattered after the persecution that arose over Stephen
traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word…”
— Acts 11:19, NKJV

Then Scripture says some of them preached the Lord Jesus to the Hellenists, and

“The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord.”
— Acts 11:21, NKJV

This is the mystery of God’s providence. What the enemy intends for suppression, God can use for multiplication.

The Algerian church has been pressured, scattered, and forced into hiding. But if believers remain faithful, prayerful, and rooted in Scripture, those hidden places can become seedbeds of gospel endurance.

Every home fellowship can become a witness. Every underground prayer meeting can become a place of spiritual strengthening. Every persecuted believer can carry the testimony of Jesus Christ into family, workplace, neighborhood, and community.

A Warning to Governments That Oppose Christ’s Church

Governments should understand that opposing the church of Jesus Christ is not a light matter.

The church does not belong to pastors, denominations, foreign organizations, or political movements. The church belongs to Christ.

Paul wrote:

“Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.”
— Ephesians 5:25, NKJV

When a state persecutes the church, it opposes those whom Christ purchased. When it shuts down worship, it interferes with obedience to God. When it criminalizes evangelism, it resists the command of the risen Lord.

The early persecutor Saul learned this personally. Before his conversion, he persecuted Christians intensely. Acts says he made havoc of the church, entering houses and dragging off men and women to prison.

“As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house,
and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison.”
— Acts 8:3, NKJV

But when the risen Christ appeared to him on the road to Damascus, Jesus did not say, “Why are you persecuting My followers?” He said:

“Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”
— Acts 9:4, NKJV

This is a fearful truth. To persecute Christ’s people is to persecute Christ Himself.

Every government, official, court, police authority, and local administrator should tremble before this reality. The Lord Jesus identifies with His suffering people.

The Responsibility of the Global Church

The suffering of Algeria’s Christians should not be ignored by the global church. When one part of the body suffers, the whole body should care.

Paul wrote:

“And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it;
or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:26, NKJV

This means believers in America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the rest of the world should not treat Algeria’s underground church as distant news. These are brothers and sisters in Christ. Their struggle belongs to the whole household of faith.

The church should pray for them. Churches should speak about them. Christian media should report on them. Believers should advocate for religious freedom while remembering that the deepest need is spiritual endurance in Christ.

Hebrews says:

“Remember the prisoners as if chained with them —
those who are mistreated — since you yourselves are in the body also.”
— Hebrews 13:3, NKJV

Even when Algerian believers are not physically imprisoned, many are being pressured into a kind of religious confinement. Their churches are closed. Their meetings are restricted. Their public worship is suppressed. Their fellowship is forced into hiding.

They must be remembered.

Prayer Points for Algeria’s Persecuted Christians

Christians worldwide should pray urgently and specifically for Algeria.

Pray that the Lord will strengthen Protestant pastors whose churches have been closed.

Pray that believers forced into homes and hidden gatherings will remain faithful, joyful, and deeply rooted in Scripture.

Pray for converts from Islam who face pressure from family, community, and authorities.

Pray that Algeria’s government will allow churches to reopen and grant Christians the freedom to worship publicly and peacefully.

Pray that the gospel will spread through the very networks of underground fellowship that persecution has created.

Pray that fear will not silence the witness of Christ.

Pray that the Lord will raise up courageous leaders like Stephen, faithful witnesses like Peter and John, evangelists like Philip, and transformed servants like Paul.

Pray that Algeria will hear the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Doors May Be Closed, But Christ Is Not Defeated

Algeria’s Protestant churches are facing severe state pressure. Many have been forced to shut their doors. Believers have been pushed into hidden worship. Pastors and congregations are navigating fear, uncertainty, and restriction.

But this is not the end of the story.

The church has been scattered before. The church has worshiped in homes before. The church has preached under threat before. The church has been commanded to be silent before. And every time, Christ has remained Lord.

When the apostles were beaten and commanded not to speak in the name of Jesus, they did not leave defeated. Scripture says:

“So they departed from the presence of the council,
rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name.”
— Acts 5:41, NKJV

Then the next verse says:

“And daily in the temple, and in every house,
They did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.”
— Acts 5:42, NKJV

That is the pattern for the persecuted church.

In public, when possible.
In homes when necessary.
In suffering with joy.
In danger with courage.
In all things, preaching Jesus as the Christ.

Algeria’s government may shut the doors of the church, but it cannot shut the doors of heaven. It may push believers underground, but it cannot bury the gospel. It may restrict visible worship, but it cannot dethrone the risen Son of God.

The true church of Jesus Christ is not defeated by persecution. It is refined.

And the Word of God is not chained.

The Roman Catholic Church is one of the most powerful and influential religious institutions in world history. It has wealth, global reach, political influence, ancient traditions, massive buildings, billions of followers, religious rituals, priests, bishops, cardinals, and a pope, whom Roman Catholics view as the visible head of the church on earth.

But spiritual authority is not proven by size. Truth is not proven by age. Biblical doctrine is not established by religious tradition. Salvation is not secured by membership in an institution. The question every person must face is not whether a religion is old, wealthy, powerful, respected, or widely accepted. The question is this:

Does it agree with the New Testament gospel of Jesus Christ?

The Lord Jesus Christ did not leave the church free to invent its gospel. He did not command His disciples to build a religious empire. He did not authorize man-made doctrines that compete with His finished work on the cross. He did not establish a system where sinners are saved by rituals, priests, sacraments, indulgences, Mary, saints, tradition, purgatory, or the authority of Rome.

Jesus said:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
John 14:6

That statement leaves no room for another mediator, another savior, another gospel, or another system of salvation.

This article examines thirty Roman Catholic doctrines and practices that Scripture must test. These points are drawn from the doctrinal concerns outlined for this article, which identify major Catholic teachings such as devotion to Mary, prayers to saints, the Mass, purgatory, indulgences, papal infallibility, sacramental salvation, and the elevation of tradition over Scripture.

This article does not express hatred for the Catholic people. Catholics are precious souls made in the image of God, and many are deeply religious, sincere, moral, charitable, and devoted. But sincerity cannot save. Religion cannot save. Church membership cannot save anyone. Baptism cannot save. The pope cannot save any soul. Mary cannot save. The sacraments cannot save.

Only Jesus Christ can save souls.

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:12

Therefore, the Roman Catholic system must be tested by the Word of God.

1. The Exaltation of Mary Beyond Scripture

The Bible honors Mary as the virgin chosen by God to bear Jesus Christ according to the flesh. She was highly favored, blessed among women, and obedient to the word of the Lord.

But Scripture never presents Mary as a mediator, redeemer, queen of heaven, dispenser of grace, or one to whom Christians should pray.

The New Testament teaches:

“For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.”
1 Timothy 2:5

There is one Mediator. Not two. Not Jesus and Mary. Not Jesus and the saints. Jesus alone stands between God and man.

When Catholic devotion gives Mary titles, prayers, trust, and spiritual dependence that Scripture reserves for God alone, it moves beyond biblical honor and into dangerous spiritual territory. The church may honor Mary as the earthly mother of Jesus, but it must never exalt her into a role God did not bestow upon her.

2. Praying to Saints

Roman Catholics commonly pray to saints, asking for their intercession. But the Bible never commands Christians to pray to the dead.

Prayer in Scripture is directed to God. Jesus taught His disciples:

“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven…”
Matthew 6:9

The apostles prayed to God. The early church prayed to God. Believers are invited to approach the throne of grace through Christ.

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace.”
Hebrews 4:16

The New Testament calls all true believers “saints,” not only a special group canonized centuries later by church authorities.

“To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints…”
1 Corinthians 1:2

Praying to departed saints gives created beings a spiritual role that Scripture does not assign to them. The believer’s confidence must be in the living Christ, not in the dead.

3. The Rosary

The Rosary centers heavily on repeated prayers, especially the “Hail Mary.” This practice is not found in the New Testament and shifts spiritual attention toward Mary in a way that the apostles never taught.

Jesus warned:

“And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do.”
Matthew 6:7

The issue is not merely repetition itself, because Scripture sometimes records repeated cries to God. The issue is mechanical, ritualized prayer that treats repeated formulas as spiritually effective. True prayer is not a counting system. It is living communion with God through Jesus Christ.

The New Testament church prayed with understanding, faith, repentance, thanksgiving, and dependence on God. It did not teach believers to recite Marian formulas.

4. The Catholic Mass as a Representation of Christ’s Sacrifice

Roman Catholic theology teaches that the Mass makes the sacrifice of Christ present. But the New Testament declares that Christ’s sacrifice was completed once for all.

“Who does not need, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices… For this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.”
Hebrews 7:27

Again:

“But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.”
Hebrews 10:12

Jesus did not leave an unfinished sacrifice. He cried:

“It is finished.”
John 19:30

Any religious system that presents Christ’s sacrifice as needing repeated sacramental representation risks undermining the finality and sufficiency of the cross.

5. Transubstantiation

Transubstantiation teaches that the bread and wine become the literal body and blood of Christ. But the New Testament presents the Lord’s Supper as a memorial proclamation of His death until He comes.

Jesus said:

“Do this in remembrance of Me.”
Luke 22:19

Paul wrote:

“For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”
1 Corinthians 11:26

The bread and cup point believers back to the body and blood of Christ, offered on the cross. They do not become an object to be worshiped. The power is not in a priestly transformation of elements but in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

6. Purgatory

Purgatory teaches that some souls undergo purification after death before entering heaven. But Scripture teaches that Christ’s blood cleanses believers from sin and that, after death, judgment comes.

“The blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.”
1 John 1:7

“And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”
Hebrews 9:27

The New Testament does not teach a middle place where believers undergo purification to complete Christ’s unfinished work. The gospel says:

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 8:1

Purgatory weakens the believer’s confidence in the finished work of Christ and introduces a post-death purification system that the apostles did not preach.

7. Indulgences

Indulgences are tied to the Catholic doctrine of purgatory and are said to reduce temporal punishment for sin. But the New Testament teaches forgiveness through repentance and faith in Christ, not through church-issued benefits.

Peter told Simon the sorcerer:

“Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you.”
Acts 8:22

Forgiveness is not purchased, earned, transferred, or managed by a religious treasury. God grants it through Christ.

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.”
Ephesians 1:7

8. Confession to Priests for Absolution

The Bible teaches the confession of sin, but it does not teach that believers must confess to a priest to receive absolution.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.”
1 John 1:9

The “He” is God.

Believers may confess faults to one another for prayer and healing:

“Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another.”
James 5:16

But no New Testament priesthood is established where a man stands as the required absolver of another believer’s sins. Jesus Christ is the High Priest.

“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God…”
Hebrews 4:14

9. Unbiblical Religious Titles

Catholicism uses titles such as “Holy Father” for the pope. But Jesus warned:

“Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.”
Matthew 23:9

The issue is spiritual exaltation. No man should be given a title that places him in the position of spiritual supremacy over God’s people.

“Holy Father” is a phrase Jesus used when praying to God the Father:

“Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me.”
John 17:11

Such holy language belongs to God, not to a religious ruler in Rome.

10. Papal Infallibility

The doctrine of papal infallibility holds that the pope can speak without error on matters of faith and morals under certain conditions. But Scripture teaches that all men are fallible and subject to God’s Word.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23

The apostles themselves were accountable to the truth of the gospel. Paul even publicly rebuked Peter for acting hypocritically.

“But when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed.”
Galatians 2:11

If Peter himself could be corrected, no later bishop can claim unquestionable doctrinal authority. Scripture, not the pope, is the final authority.

11. Canonization of Saints

The Catholic Church officially declares certain people to be saints. But the New Testament uses “saints” to refer to all true believers in Christ.

“To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints.”
Romans 1:7

Sainthood is not a posthumous status granted by Rome. It is the identity of those sanctified in Christ Jesus. Every born-again believer is called to holiness.

“But as He who called you is holy, you also should be holy in all your conduct.”
1 Peter 1:15

12. Veneration of Relics

Relics are physical objects associated with saints or holy figures. Catholic devotion to relics can treat material objects as channels of grace or spiritual power.

But Scripture warns against worshiping created things rather than the Creator.

Who exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature instead of the Creator?
Romans 1:25

The Christian faith does not rest in bones, clothing fragments, artifacts, or objects. It rests in the risen Christ.

13. Baptismal Regeneration

Roman Catholicism teaches that baptism regenerates the soul. But Scripture teaches that salvation is by grace through faith.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.”
Ephesians 2:8

Baptism is commanded and important, but it is not a substitute for repentance and faith. Water cannot replace the blood of Christ. Ceremony cannot replace regeneration by the Holy Spirit.

Paul said:

“For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel.”
1 Corinthians 1:17

That does not mean baptism is unimportant. It shows baptism is not the gospel itself.

14. Infant Baptism

In the New Testament, baptism is connected with repentance, faith, and the reception of the gospel.

“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.”
Acts 2:38

“Then those who gladly received his word were baptized.”
Acts 2:41

An infant cannot consciously repent, believe the gospel, or confess Jesus Christ as Lord. The New Testament pattern is believer’s baptism following faith.

15. Prayers for the Dead

Catholicism includes prayers for the dead, especially in connection with purgatory. But Scripture teaches that a person’s eternal state is determined by judgment after death.

“It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”
Hebrews 9:27

The rich man in Luke 16 could not cross from torment to comfort after death. His condition was fixed.

“Between you and us there is a great gulf fixed.”
Luke 16:26

The living must repent now. After death, there is no biblical promise that prayers from the living can change the soul’s eternal condition.

16. The Immaculate Conception of Mary

The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception teaches that Mary was conceived without original sin. But Scripture teaches universal human sinfulness.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23

Mary herself rejoiced in God as her Savior:

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.”
Luke 1:46–47

If Mary needed a Savior, she was sinful by nature. The only sinless One revealed in Scripture is Jesus Christ.

“He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.”
1 Peter 2:22

17. The Assumption of Mary

The Assumption teaches that Mary was taken bodily into heaven. But the New Testament does not record such an event or command the church to believe it.

Biblical doctrine must not be built on silence. Scripture is sufficient for faith and practice.

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God… so that the man of God may be complete.”
2 Timothy 3:16–17

If a doctrine is necessary for the church, God can reveal it clearly in His Word. The Assumption of Mary is not apostolic doctrine.

18. Statues and Images in Worship

Catholic churches often contain statues and images used devotionally. But Scripture repeatedly warns against bowing before images.

“You shall not make for yourself a carved image… You shall not bow down to them nor serve them.”
Exodus 20:4–5

The New Testament continues the warning:

“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”
1 John 5:21

Even if Catholics claim they are not worshiping the statue itself, bowing, praying, lighting candles, and directing devotion through images create a danger of idolatry. God is Spirit; those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and in truth.

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
John 4:24

19. The Seven Sacraments as Necessary Channels of Salvation

Roman Catholicism teaches seven sacraments as means of grace. But the gospel teaches that sinners are justified by faith in Christ, not by ritual participation.

“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Romans 5:1

“A man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ.”
Galatians 2:16

When religious rituals become necessary mechanisms of salvation, the sufficiency of Christ is obscured. An institution does not administer true salvation. It is granted by God to those who repent and believe the gospel.

20. The Sign of the Cross

The sign of the cross is not commanded in the New Testament. The cross itself is central to Christianity, but repeated gestures can become ritualistic or superstitious when treated as a means of spiritual protection.

Paul said:

“God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Galatians 6:14

The believer’s confidence is not in making a sign over the body. The believer’s confidence is in the crucified and risen Savior.

21. Holy Water

Holy water is used in Catholic practice for blessing, protection, and purification. But the New Testament gives no doctrine that blessed water carries spiritual power.

The blood of Christ cleanses us from sin.

“To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood.”
Revelation 1:5

The Holy Spirit sanctifies believers.

“But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
1 Corinthians 6:11

No blessed water can replace the cleansing work of Christ and the Spirit.

22. Mandatory Celibacy of Priests

The Roman Catholic priesthood requires celibacy in its Latin rite. But the New Testament allows church leaders to be married.

“A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife.”
1 Timothy 3:2

“Let deacons be the husbands of one wife.”
1 Timothy 3:12

Paul warned that forbidding marriage would be a mark of false teaching.

“In latter times, some will depart from the faith… forbidding marriage.”
1 Timothy 4:1–3

Marriage is honorable. A church has no authority to impose celibacy as a universal requirement where Scripture does not.

23. The Perpetual Virginity of Mary

The virgin birth of Jesus Christ is biblical and essential. But the doctrine that Mary remained a virgin for her entire life is not clearly taught in Scripture.

The Bible refers to Jesus’ brothers and sisters.

“Is this not the carpenter’s son? Isn’t His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas?”
Matthew 13:55

The New Testament focus is not on Mary’s perpetual virginity. The focus is Jesus Christ, the Son of God, born of a virgin, crucified for sinners, raised from the dead, and exalted as Lord.

24. Marian Apparitions

Roman Catholicism has a long history of alleged Marian apparitions. But any spiritual message must be tested by Scripture.

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God.”
1 John 4:1

Even supernatural appearances are not proof of truth.

“For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.”
2 Corinthians 11:14

If any apparition promotes devotion that shifts glory from Christ, contradicts Scripture, or encourages dependence on Mary, it must be rejected.

Some Catholics treat the scapular as a sign of protection or special grace. But the New Testament does not teach that wearing a religious object grants spiritual security.

The believer’s security is in Christ.

“And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.”
John 10:28

Objects cannot save. Garments cannot save. Tokens cannot save. Jesus saves.

26. Extreme Unction and Last Rites

Catholic last rites are believed to prepare the soul for death and may include the forgiveness of sins. But Scripture teaches that forgiveness comes through repentance and faith in Christ.

“Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.”
Acts 3:19

James does speak of elders praying over the sick and anointing with oil:

“Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil.”
James 5:14

But this is not a priestly death ritual that guarantees preparation for heaven. A person must be reconciled to God through Christ before death, not depend on a final ritual.

27. Ritualized Liturgy That Replaces Spirit and Truth

Orderly worship is biblical. But highly ritualized worship can become spiritually empty when ceremony replaces truth, repentance, and living faith.

Jesus said:

“These people draw near to Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.”
Matthew 15:8

True worship is not merely liturgical beauty, incense, robes, chants, kneeling, candles, or ceremony. True worship is in Spirit and in truth.

“The true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.”
John 4:23

28. Elevating Tradition Alongside or Above Scripture

One of the central errors of Roman Catholicism is the elevation of church tradition as a binding authority. But Jesus rebuked religious leaders for allowing tradition to corrupt obedience to God.

“Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.”
Matthew 15:6

Scripture is God-breathed and sufficient.

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God… that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:16–17

When tradition becomes equal to or higher than Scripture, man’s word competes with God’s Word.

29. Eucharistic Adoration

Eucharistic adoration involves worship directed toward the consecrated host. But if the bread remains bread as a memorial symbol, then worshiping it is idolatry.

God does not dwell in objects made by human hands.

“God, who made the world and everything in it… does not dwell in temples made with hands.”

Jesus Christ is not to be worshiped as a wafer on an altar. He is the risen Lord seated at the right hand of the Father.

“Christ… is even at the right hand of God.”

30. Prayers to the Holy Family

Catholic devotion sometimes includes prayers to the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. But Scripture does not teach prayer to a family unit. Prayer is directed to God through Christ.

Jesus said:

“Whatever you ask in My name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”
John 14:13

Joseph was a faithful man. Mary was blessed among women. But neither Joseph nor Mary is a recipient of Christian prayer. The believer prays to the Father in the name of Jesus Christ by the help of the Holy Spirit.

The central issue is not merely one doctrine. It is the gospel itself.

The New Testament gospel is clear:

Man is a sinner.
God is holy.
Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God.
He died for sins once for all.
He rose bodily from the dead.
He is the only Mediator between God and man.
Salvation is by grace through faith, not by works, rituals, sacraments, Mary, saints, purgatory, indulgences, or church membership.

Paul warned:

“But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.”
Galatians 1:8

Any system that adds human works, priestly mediation, sacramental dependence, Marian devotion, or institutional authority to the finished work of Christ must be rejected.

No Catholic is saved by being a Catholic.
No Protestant is saved by being a Protestant.
No Baptist, Pentecostal, Methodist, Anglican, Presbyterian, or non-denominational churchgoer is saved by belonging to a religious group.

Only those who are born again through faith in Jesus Christ belong to God.

Jesus said:

“Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
John 3:3

This is the urgent call to every Catholic soul: come directly to Jesus Christ. Do not trust Rome. Do not trust Mary. Do not trust saints. Do not trust sacraments. Do not trust the Mass. Do not trust purgatory. Do not trust indulgences. Do not trust priests. Do not trust the pope.

Trust Christ.

He alone died for your sins.
He alone rose from the dead.
He alone is Lord.
He alone is the Mediator.
He alone is the Savior.
He alone can wash away sin.
He alone can grant eternal life.

“Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.”
Acts 16:31

The door of salvation is still open. But it is not opened by religion. Christ opens it.

Repent. Believe the gospel. Follow Jesus Christ as revealed in the Scriptures. Come out of every false system and stand upon the Word of God.

The Lord Jesus said:

“If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
John 8:31–32

The truth is not Rome.
The truth is not tradition.
The truth is not ritual.
The truth is not Mary.
The truth is not the pope.

The truth is Jesus Christ.

If Jesus Christ and His apostles did not teach the Roman Catholic Mass, did not command the Rosary, did not instruct believers to pray to Mary or the dead saints, did not baptize infants as a means of salvation, did not establish purgatory, did not sell indulgences, did not create papal authority, did not appoint cardinals, did not require priests to remain unmarried, did not command the veneration of statues and relics, and did not teach that sacraments administered by a religious institution are necessary for salvation, then every honest reader must ask the unavoidable question:

Where did these doctrines come from?

They did not come from the New Testament. They did not come from the Lord Jesus Christ. They did not come from the apostles. They did not come from the church born by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

They came from religious tradition, institutional power, centuries of man-made development, and doctrines that people added after the apostolic foundation had already been laid.

This is the great danger of Roman Catholicism. It presents itself as ancient Christianity, yet many of its defining doctrines cannot be found in the teachings of Christ or His apostles. It claims apostolic authority while practicing beliefs the apostles never preached. It speaks of grace while placing sinners under a system of rituals, priests, sacraments, penance, purgatory, devotion to Mary, saintly intercession, and church authority.

But the New Testament gospel is clear. Salvation is not found in Rome. Salvation is not found in Mary. Salvation is not found in the pope. Salvation is not found in the Mass. Salvation is not found in sacraments, relics, rituals, indulgences, or prayers for the dead.

Salvation is found only in Jesus Christ.

The Bible says:

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:12

Therefore, every Catholic must examine these doctrines in the light of Scripture. If a doctrine cannot trace its origins to Jesus Christ and the apostles in the New Testament, it has no authority over the soul. If a religious practice leads people away from Christ’s finished work and toward man-made systems, it is spiritually dangerous. If a church places tradition beside or above Scripture, it has departed from the faith once delivered to the saints.

The call is not to defend religion.
The call is to repent.
The call is to come out of man-made tradition.
The call is to believe the gospel.
The call is to trust Jesus Christ alone.

The Lord Jesus did not say, “Come to a religious system.”
He said:

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

That is the invitation Catholics must hear. Not come to Rome. Not come to Mary. Not come to a priest. Not come to the sacraments. Not come to purgatory. Not come to religious traditions.

Come to Jesus Christ.

Only He died for sinners.
Only He rose from the dead.
Only He is seated at the right hand of the Father.
Only He is the Mediator between God and man.
Only He can forgive sins.
Only He can grant eternal life.

Any religion that adds to Him, competes with Him, or redirects sinners away from Him is not the New Testament faith. It is another gospel, and Scripture warns that another gospel cannot save.

“But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.”
Galatians 1:8

This is why Roman Catholicism must be tested, exposed, and rejected wherever it contradicts the Word of God. Souls are at stake. Eternity is at stake. The gospel is at stake.

The safe path is not tradition.
The safe path is not religious loyalty.
The safe path is not institutional power.

The safe path is Jesus Christ, according to the Scriptures.

The spiritually ‘rotten’ condition of the modern Laodicean Church and Christianity is a serious concern. It has form, but little fire. It has services but little surrender. It has crowds but little conviction. It has music but little mourning over sin. It has programs but little prayer. It has Bible talk but little Bible obedience. That is Laodicea.

The modern global church that claims to represent Jesus Christ is facing one of the most dangerous spiritual crises in history. It is not primarily a crisis of buildings, money, attendance, platforms, denominations, lights, cameras, music, conferences, or religious branding. It is a crisis of obedience. It is a crisis of holiness. It is a crisis of doctrine. It is a crisis of the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

The Lord Jesus Himself described such a church in the book of Revelation. He called it the church of Laodicea.

This church did not appear dead. It had activity. It had confidence. It had a religious identity. It had wealth. It had self-esteem. It had a public reputation. It had the language of success. But in the eyes of Christ, it was spiritually bankrupt.

Jesus said:

“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, “I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing”—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.”
Revelation 3:15–17

That is one of the most terrifying rebukes ever spoken by the Lord Jesus Christ to a church. It was not spoken to pagans. It was not spoken to by atheists. It was not addressed to idolaters outside the visible church. It was spoken in a church that carried His name.

This is the danger of the Laodicean condition: a church can claim Christ, speak of Christ, sing about Christ, raise money in Christ’s name, build institutions in Christ’s name, and still be rejected by Christ because it refuses to submit to Him as Lord.

The modern Laodicean church says, “We are rich.”
Christ says, “You are poor.”

She says, “We need nothing.”
Christ says, “You need Me.”

She says, “We can see.”
Christ says, “You are blind.”

She says, “We are clothed in success.”
Christ says, “You are naked.”

She says, “We are alive.”
Christ says, “You are miserable.”

The issue is not whether the modern church has religion. The issue is whether she has Christ.

1. The Laodicean Church Is Lukewarm

The first characteristic of the Laodicean church is lukewarmness. Jesus said, “You are neither cold nor hot.” This means the church has no holy fire, no clear separation from the world, no deep zeal for righteousness, no urgent burden for souls, and no trembling fear of God.

Lukewarm Christianity is religious enough to avoid feeling like the world, but worldly enough to avoid suffering for Christ.

It wants Jesus as Savior but not as Lord.
It wants forgiveness without repentance.
It wants blessings without obedience.
It wants worship without holiness.
It wants heaven without the narrow road.

But Jesus said:

“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
Luke 9:23

The cross is not a decoration. It is death to self. It is death to sin. It is death to rebellion. It is death to the old man.

The Laodicean church has replaced the cross with comfort. It has replaced repentance with therapy. It has replaced holiness with entertainment. It has replaced the fear of God with motivational speeches. It has replaced the gospel of the kingdom with a consumer-friendly religious brand.

The apostle Paul warned that in the last days, many would have “a form of godliness” while denying its power.

“Having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!”
2 Timothy 3:5

This is the condition of much of modern Christianity. It has form but little fire. It has services but little surrender. It has crowds but little conviction. It has music but little mourning over sin. It has programs but little prayer. It has Bible talk but little Bible obedience.

That is Laodicea.

2. The Laodicean Church Is Spiritually Proud

Jesus said the Laodicean church says, “I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing.” This is spiritual pride. It is the arrogance of a church that measures success by money, influence, technology, popularity, degrees, buildings, attendance, political access, and social approval.

But God does not measure a church the way men do.

Men count seats. God weighs hearts.
Men count money. God searches motives.
Men praise platforms. God examines obedience.
Men celebrate popularity. God demands faithfulness.

The Lord said through the prophet Isaiah:

“But on this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit and who trembles at My word.”
Isaiah 66:2

The Laodicean church does not tremble at the Word. It debates the Word. It edits the Word. It explains away the Word. It places culture above the Word. It places feelings above the Word. It places denominational traditions above the Word. It places modern opinion above the Word.

But the true church bows before Scripture because Scripture is the written Word of God.

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness.”
2 Timothy 3:16

Where the Word of God no longer corrects the church, the church is no longer walking in submission to God.

3. The Laodicean Church Is Blind

Jesus called the Laodicean church blind. This is not physical blindness. It is spiritual blindness. It is the inability to see sin as sin, truth as truth, rebellion as rebellion, and Christ as Lord.

A blind church cannot discern the difference between the Holy Spirit and emotionalism.
A blind church cannot discern the difference between biblical love and sinful tolerance.
A blind church cannot discern the difference between grace and lawlessness.
A blind church cannot discern the difference between true worship and religious performance.
A blind church cannot discern the difference between the narrow path and the broad way.

Jesus said:

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.”
Matthew 7:13

The broad way is popular. The narrow way is holy. The broad way pleases the flesh. The narrow way crucifies the flesh. The broad way celebrates self. The narrow way denies self. The broad way says, “God understands.” The narrow way says, “Repent and obey.”

The modern Laodicean church often teaches people how to feel accepted without teaching them how to be sanctified. But Scripture says:

“Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.”
Hebrews 12:14

No holiness, no vision of God. No sanctification, no evidence of true discipleship.

4. The Laodicean Church Is Naked

Jesus said the Laodicean church is naked. Nakedness in Scripture often represents shame, exposure, and lack of spiritual covering. The church may be clothed outwardly with religious beauty, but if it lacks righteousness, it is exposed before God.

Jesus counseled the Laodiceans:

“I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed.”
Revelation 3:18

White garments speak of purity, righteousness, and holiness. The modern church desperately needs to be clothed again by Christ—not with denominational pride, not with political power, not with religious branding, but with the righteousness that comes from Him.

The apostle Paul wrote:

“Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.”
Romans 13:14

But the Laodicean church makes room for the flesh. It makes excuses for the flesh. It entertains the flesh. It baptizes the flesh in religious language. It gives the flesh a microphone, a title, and a platform.

The church that refuses holiness has chosen nakedness.

5. The Laodicean Church Rebels Against the Lordship of Jesus Christ

The greatest issue in the modern church is not merely moral failure. It is rebellion against the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Many call Him Savior, but few obey Him as Lord.

Jesus asked:

“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord’ and not do the things that I say?”
Luke 6:46

This question exposes modern Christianity. If Jesus is Lord, His Word governs the church. If Jesus is Lord, His commandments are not optional. If Jesus is Lord, His apostles’ doctrine is not negotiable. If Jesus is Lord, His church does not have permission to create its own order, culture, morality, leadership structure, or gospel.

Jesus said:

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
John 14:15

Love is not proven by singing. Love is proven by obedience. Worship without obedience is noise. Ministry without obedience is rebellion. Preaching without obedience is hypocrisy.

The Laodicean church wants Christ’s name but not Christ’s government. It wants Christ’s blessings but not Christ’s authority. It wants Christ’s blood but not Christ’s yoke.

But the true church confesses:

“He is the head of the body, the church.”
Colossians 1:18

Jesus Christ is not a symbolic head. He is the actual Head of the church. Therefore, the church does not belong to pastors, boards, donors, denominations, celebrities, politicians, or voters. The church belongs to Jesus Christ.

6. The Church Is Theocratic, Not Democratic

One of the dangerous errors of the modern church is the attempt to govern it through political democracy rather than by divine authority. The church is not a nation-state, a social club, a corporation, or a public opinion forum. The church is the body of Christ, ruled by God.

The Father reigns.
The Son is the Head.
The Holy Spirit leads.
The Word of God governs.

The early church did not create doctrine by popular vote. The apostles did not ask the culture what the church should believe. They preached what they received from Christ.

“And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”
Acts 2:42

The church is not authorized to vote against apostolic doctrine. No congregation has the authority to overrule Scripture. No board has the authority to override Christ. No denomination has the authority to redefine sin, leadership, marriage, holiness, worship, or salvation.

Paul told Timothy:

“These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God.”
1 Timothy 3:14–15

The house of God has a prescribed order. The church is not free to invent its own non-biblical culture. It is commanded to submit to the order of God.

7. The Laodicean Church Ordains What God Has Not Authorized

Another sign of rebellion is when the modern church ordains what God has not authorized and then calls that rebellion “progress.” One major example is the ordination of women as pastors and authoritative teachers over men, which many churches now defend despite the apostolic instruction given in Scripture.

Paul wrote:

“And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.”
1 Timothy 2:12

He also wrote:

“Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says.”

This does not mean women are inferior. Scripture honors women of faith, service, prayer, prophecy, hospitality, discipleship, and courage. Women followed Jesus. Women supported His ministry. Women were witnesses of His resurrection. Older women are commanded to teach younger women in godliness according to Titus 2:3–5.

But Scripture does establish order in the church. The issue is not value. The issue is authority. The modern church rejects this because it has adopted the spirit of the age rather than the order of God.

When churches knowingly reject biblical order, they are not becoming enlightened. They are becoming Laodicean.

8. The Laodicean Church Manufactures Its Own Culture

The modern church has created a non-biblical religious culture that often looks more like the world than the kingdom of God. Instead of shaping believers into disciples, many churches shape attendees into consumers.

The sermon becomes a motivational talk.
The worship becomes a concert.
The pastor becomes a celebrity.
The church becomes a brand.
The congregation becomes an audience.
The altar becomes a stage.
The gospel becomes a product.

But Jesus did not command the church to entertain the nations. He commanded the church to make disciples.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Matthew 28:19

A church that does not make disciples is failing its commission.

The modern Laodicean church often produces believers who know church culture but do not know Scripture; who know worship songs but do not know prayer; who know Christian language but do not know obedience; who know ministry events but do not know the fear of the Lord.

This is not New Testament Christianity.

The New Testament church was devoted to doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread, prayer, holiness, evangelism, giving, discipline, and the presence of God. The modern church must return to that pattern or face the rebuke of Christ.

9. The Laodicean Church Tolerates Sin

The modern church often tolerates what Scripture condemns. Many professing Christians now live openly in sins that the Bible says exclude people from the kingdom of God unless they repent.

Paul warned:

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived.”
1 Corinthians 6:9

He then lists sins, including sexual immorality, idolatry, adultery, homosexuality, theft, covetousness, drunkenness, reviling, and extortion. Then he says:

“And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified.”
1 Corinthians 6:11

The gospel does not leave sinners unchanged. It washes. It sanctifies. It justifies. It delivers.

Yet many professing Christians live as though grace is permission to sin. They smoke, drink, pursue nightclub culture, gossip, slander, hate, commit sexual immorality, commit adultery, consume unclean entertainment, and still call themselves followers of Jesus.

But Scripture says:

“Do not love the world or the things in the world.”
1 John 2:15

And again:

“Whoever, therefore, wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”
James 4:4

The Laodicean church is comfortable with the world because it has lost the fear of God.

10. The Laodicean Church Practices Gossip, Slander, and Backbiting

One of the overlooked sins in modern Christianity is the sin of the tongue. Gossip, slander, backbiting, accusation, whispering, and character assassination are treated lightly in many churches. But God does not treat them lightly.

Scripture says:

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”
Proverbs 18:21

Paul lists whisperers and backbiters among the marks of depraved conduct in Romans 1:29–30. James warns:

“And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity.”
James 3:6

A church filled with gossip is not healthy. A church where people destroy one another behind closed doors is not walking in love. A church where believers slander ministers, families, leaders, or one another is grieving the Holy Spirit.

Paul wrote:

“Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.”
Ephesians 4:31

The Laodicean church excuses the sins of the tongue because it lacks spiritual discipline. But Jesus said:

“For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Matthew 12:37

11. The Laodicean Church Neglects Prayer

A prayerless church is a powerless church. A prayerless church may have programs, but it lacks presence. It may have planning, but it lacks fire. It may have a strategy, but it lacks spiritual authority.

Jesus said:

“My house shall be called a house of prayer.”

He did not say His house would be called a house of marketing, entertainment, politics, concerts, or personality worship. He said a prayer.

The early church prayed. They prayed before Pentecost. They prayed when persecuted. They prayed when leaders were chosen. They prayed when Peter was imprisoned. They prayed when missionaries were sent. They prayed constantly.

“These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication.”
Acts 1:14

The modern church often gives prayer a few minutes and entertainment an hour. It gives announcements more attention than intercession. It gives programs more energy than the altar. This is Laodicean weakness.

Paul commanded:

“Pray without ceasing.”
1 Thessalonians 5:17

The church must return to prayer or continue in spiritual poverty.

12. The Laodicean Church Neglects Baptism and Discipleship

Jesus commanded the church to make disciples and baptize them.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them…”

Baptism is not a man-made tradition. It is commanded by Christ. Peter preached on the day of Pentecost:

“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.”
Acts 2:38

The Ethiopian eunuch was baptized after believing the gospel. The Philippian jailer was baptized. New believers in Acts were baptized. Baptism marks identification with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection.

Paul wrote:

“Therefore, we were buried with Him through baptism into death.”
Romans 6:4

A church that neglects baptism neglects Christ’s command. A church that gathers people but fails to disciple them is not fulfilling the Great Commission. It is producing religious spectators rather than obedient followers.

13. The Laodicean Church Refuses to Evangelize

A silent church in a dying world is a disobedient church.

Jesus said:

“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”
Mark 16:15

The modern church often talks about outreach but rarely trains believers to witness. Many Christians are ashamed to speak of Christ publicly. They can talk about politics, sports, money, entertainment, business, and personal opinions, but not the gospel.

Yet Jesus warned:

“For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed.”
Luke 9:26

The Laodicean church does not burn for souls because it is consumed with self. It is worried about comfort, image, attendance, branding, and acceptance. But the true church carries the burden of eternity.

Paul said:

“Woe is me if I do not preach the gospel!”
1 Corinthians 9:16

The church must recover that urgency.

14. The Laodicean Church Fails to Support the Work of the Gospel

Many professing Christians enjoy the benefits of ministry but refuse to contribute financially to the work of the gospel. They spend freely on themselves but give little or nothing to the work of Christ.

Jesus said:

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:21

A person’s giving reveals the location of the heart. If the heart is in the kingdom, the treasure will support the kingdom. If the heart is in the world, the treasure will remain in the world.

Paul wrote:

“So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”
2 Corinthians 9:7

The church does not preach financial giving out of greed. It preaches giving because the gospel mission requires labor, resources, sacrifice, publishing, preaching, sending, feeding, building, broadcasting, discipling, and evangelizing.

The Laodicean believer says, “I need nothing.” The faithful disciple says, “Lord, all I have belongs to You.”

15. The Laodicean Church Mishandles Spiritual Gifts

The modern church also struggles with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Some churches discourage praying in tongues altogether, despite the New Testament witness to spiritual gifts. Other churches practice tongues carelessly and disorderly, without interpretation, in violation of Scripture.

Paul said:

“Do not forbid speaking in tongues.”
1 Corinthians 14:39

But he also commanded order:

“If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.”
1 Corinthians 14:27

And again:

“Let all things be done decently and in order.”
1 Corinthians 14:40

The answer is not to deny the gifts. The answer is not to abuse the gifts. The answer is biblical order under the authority of the Holy Spirit and Scripture.

The Laodicean church either quenches the Spirit or counterfeits spiritual activity. The true church must desire the gifts, test all things, reject confusion, and submit every manifestation to Scripture.

16. The Laodicean Church Produces False Converts

Jesus warned that many religious people would be shocked on the day of judgment.

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 7:21

These are people who call Him Lord. They are religious. They are active. Some even claim ministry works. But Jesus says:

“I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!”
Matthew 7:23

The issue is lawlessness. Lawlessness means living without submission to God’s authority. It is professed faith without obedience. It is a religious activity without surrender.

This is one of the great terrors of the Laodicean church: it can fill buildings with people who think they are saved while living in rebellion against Christ.

The apostle Paul wrote:

“Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves.”
2 Corinthians 13:5

Every professing Christian must ask, “Am I truly following Jesus, or merely claiming Him?” Have I repented or only joined a church? Do I obey His Word, or only admire it? Do I love holiness or secretly love sin?

17. The Laodicean Church Walks the Broad Way

The modern Laodicean church has departed from the narrow path and entered the broad way when it normalizes what Jesus condemns, rejects what Scripture commands, and replaces discipleship with religious convenience.

Jesus said the broad way leads to destruction. He also said:

“Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
Matthew 7:14

Few find it because few are willing to lose themselves. Few are willing to repent deeply. Few are willing to be hated by the world. Few are willing to obey when obedience is costly. Few are willing to submit to Scripture when Scripture contradicts culture.

The Laodicean church wants the crowd. The true church wants Christ.
The Laodicean church wants acceptance. The true church wants holiness.
The Laodicean church wants influence. The true church wants obedience.
The Laodicean church wants comfort. The true church carries the cross.

18. Christ Still Calls the Laodicean Church to Repent

Even after such a severe rebuke, Jesus showed mercy. He did not only condemn Laodicea. He invited her to repent.

“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore, be zealous and repent.”
Revelation 3:19

This is the mercy of Christ. His rebuke is not hatred. His rebuke is love. He wounds in order to heal. He exposes in order to restore. He disciplines in order to save.

Then He says:

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock.”
Revelation 3:20

This verse is often used for evangelism, but in context, Jesus is speaking to a church. That is terrifying. Christ is outside the door of His own church, knocking to be let back in.

A church can have services without Christ.
A church can have sermons without Christ.
A church can have music without Christ.
A church can have money without Christ.
A church can have a reputation without Christ.
A church can have activity without Christ.

The desperate need of the modern church is not more branding. It is Christ. Not merely Christ mentioned, but Christ enthroned. Christ obeyed. Christ feared. Christ loved. Christ preached. Christ followed. Christ welcomed back inside.

19. The Cure for the Laodicean Church

Jesus gave the cure:

“Buy from Me gold refined in the fire… white garments… and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.”
Revelation 3:18

The church needs refined gold — true spiritual riches tested by fire.
The church needs white garments—righteousness, holiness, purity, and repentance.
The church needs eye salve—spiritual sight restored by the Holy Spirit.

The cure is not cosmetic reform. It is not a better program. It is not a new slogan. It is not a larger platform. It is not political power.

The cure is repentance.

Repentance from worldliness.
Repentance from prayerlessness.
Repentance from doctrinal compromise.
Repentance from sexual immorality.
Repentance from slander and gossip.
Repentance from rebellion against biblical order.
Repentance from false worship.
Repentance for refusing evangelism.
Repentance from neglecting baptism and discipleship.
Repentance from grieving the Holy Spirit.
Repentance from calling Jesus “Lord” while refusing to obey Him.

Peter said:

“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.”
Acts 3:19

The modern church must return to the Lord before it is too late.

20. A Final Warning to the Modern Church

The Laodicean church is not merely an ancient congregation. It is a prophetic mirror. It shows what happens when a church becomes rich in itself and poor toward God. It shows what happens when religion continues, but obedience disappears. It shows what happens when Christ’s name remains on the building, but Christ’s authority is rejected in practice.

The modern global church must hear the voice of Jesus Christ.

He is not asking for suggestions.
He is not negotiating doctrine.
He is not submitting to culture.
He is not running for election.
He is not waiting for the church to vote on His commandments.

He is Lord.

The Father has exalted Him. The Spirit testifies of Him. The Scriptures reveal Him. The church belongs to Him. The nations will bow before Him.

“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow… and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.”
Philippians 2:10–11

The Laodicean church must repent or be vomited out of His mouth. That is not the language of a soft warning. That is the language of divine rejection.

But to the one who overcomes, Jesus gives a promise:

“To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne.”
Revelation 3:21

There is still hope. There is still mercy. There is still time to repent. There is still a narrow path. There is still a remnant. There are still believers who love the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity, who tremble at His Word, who hate sin, who pray, who witness, who give, who obey, who worship in spirit and truth, and who refuse to bow to the culture of Laodicea.

The call is clear:

Come out of lukewarmness.
Come out of rebellion.
Come out of worldliness.
Come out of spiritual blindness.
Come out of false religion.
Come back to Jesus Christ.

Let the modern church hear the words of the Lord:

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Revelation 3:22

The Lord Jesus Christ is not looking for a fashionable church. He is looking for a faithful church.

Not a rich church in its own eyes.
Not a popular church in the eyes of the world.
Not a democratic church ruled by man.
Not a worldly church dressed in religious language.
Not a lukewarm church that makes Him sick.

He is looking for a holy church, a praying church, an obedient church, a witnessing church, a Scripture-submitted church, a Spirit-filled church, and a church that bows fully beneath His Lordship.

That is the church that will endure.
That is the church that will overcome.
That is the church that belongs to Jesus Christ.
